To appear online with a Dutch public IP address, connect to a VPN server located in the Netherlands and verify the address afterward. This changes the network exit address websites see; it does not make you a Dutch resident, provide a Dutch identity, or guarantee that a particular service will accept your connection.
How to get a Dutch IP address with a VPN
- Choose a VPN with a Netherlands location. Check that the provider currently lists a Netherlands server and that your device is supported. Confirm that your plan allows you to select that location; free-plan access and server inventories can change. Proton VPN describes its Netherlands locations and app-based connection flow in its Dutch IP setup guide. Check current provider terms before subscribing.
- Install the official app and sign in. Download it from the provider or your device’s official app store. In the app, open the server or location list and select Netherlands. The exact labels can differ by app version and device.
- Review the protection settings. If available, enable the kill switch and DNS leak protection, and check how they work on your operating system. A kill switch is intended to block traffic if the VPN connection drops, but availability and behavior vary by platform and settings. Proton VPN documents its kill switch and IP protection at its kill switch support page; NordVPN describes platform-dependent behavior in its kill switch guide.
- Connect to a Netherlands server. Wait for the app to show that the VPN connection is active before using the destination website.
- Verify the public IP. Use an IP-check website and confirm that it reports the Netherlands. If it shows your usual location, confirm the VPN is connected, reconnect to a Netherlands server, and review split-tunneling or network settings. An IP check reports a location estimate; it is not proof of residence or identity.
What a Dutch IP address does—and does not—change
A VPN routes traffic through its server, so destination websites generally see the VPN server’s public IP rather than the public IP assigned to your original connection. Your VPN provider operates that exit point and therefore becomes a party you must trust. A Dutch IP is a network-location signal, not a Dutch identity, residency status, or evidence that you qualify for a Dutch government, financial, or other restricted service.
Location checks are not the only checks services may use. A site can consider your account details, cookies, device signals, or other information, and a shared VPN exit address may not be accepted. Connecting from the Netherlands does not guarantee access to a particular website, account, or content catalog.

Security settings and limits to understand
- DNS protection: DNS requests can be handled differently depending on the VPN, app, operating system, and configuration. Enable the provider’s DNS protection if offered, then consult its documentation for your device.
- Kill switch: Check whether it is available and enabled on your platform, and understand whether it blocks all traffic or only certain connections if the VPN disconnects.
- Split tunneling: If enabled, some apps or traffic may bypass the VPN and continue using your ordinary connection. Check the configuration if an IP checker reports your original location.
- IPv6: IPv6 handling can vary. Look for platform-specific provider guidance rather than assuming the VPN treats IPv4 and IPv6 identically.
- Privacy claims: Read the current privacy policy and look for independent evidence when assessing logging, audits, and jurisdiction. A provider’s own statements describe its claims; they do not independently verify them. A VPN does not prevent cookies, account-based identification, browser fingerprinting, malware, or provider-side logging.
Keep ordinary account and device security in place
A VPN is an additional network layer, not a replacement for HTTPS, strong unique passwords, multi-factor authentication, or software updates. The Federal Trade Commission says, “Because of the widespread use of encryption, connecting through a public Wi-Fi network is usually safe.” It also recommends looking for HTTPS and keeping security software, the operating system, and the browser updated in its public Wi-Fi guidance.

Before choosing a provider
Check the details that affect your particular device and use case rather than relying on a generic claim that a VPN is secure:
- Whether a Netherlands exit location is currently available and manually selectable on your plan.
- Whether the app supports your device and documents DNS, kill-switch, and IPv6 behavior for that platform.
- What the provider’s current privacy policy says, and what independent audits or other evidence are available.
- Whether the service you intend to use accepts connections from shared VPN IP addresses.
- The current subscription cost, plan limits, and renewal terms.
Provider server lists, plan restrictions, and app behavior can change. Verify them directly before purchase; setup documentation is useful for operating an app, but it is not an independent speed or leak test.
