German factory orders measure incoming demand; industrial production measures output actually produced during a reference period. Orders can offer clues about future activity, but they are not a forecast of output: contracts can be delayed, cancelled, or take time to become production. The latest readings also cover different months—August 2026 for orders and June 2026 for production—so they should not be treated as simultaneous measures.
What each indicator measures
Factory orders: incoming demand
Destatis calls this measure new orders in manufacturing. It tracks orders received by selected manufacturing branches, rather than every industrial activity in Germany. Because it records new business, it can provide a signal about demand that may feed into future production, but not every order becomes output promptly or at all. Destatis’s August 2026 orders release explains the current series and its coverage.
Industrial production: realized output
Production records activity already realized in the reference period. Destatis’s production statistics use specific series and aggregates, so the exact series name matters: “production in industry” on a release is not automatically interchangeable with a broader production-industries aggregate. Check the definition and coverage before comparing values across pages. The Destatis production index page provides series information and data access.

How to read the latest German figures
Destatis’s 6 October 2026 release reported that real manufacturing new orders fell 10.6% in August 2026 from July, seasonally and calendar adjusted. That headline was dominated by large contracts: excluding large-scale orders, the monthly decline was 0.1%. Over June–August 2026, orders rose 1.3% compared with the preceding three months, while the comparison excluding large-scale orders fell 2.6%. July’s monthly increase was revised to 3.2%, from the previously reported 2.5%. These are provisional figures where Destatis identifies them as such and may be revised. See the August orders release.
#1 Best Overall
The concentration behind the headline is especially clear in other transport equipment, which includes aircraft, ships, trains, and military vehicles. Orders in that category fell 61.5% in August after a revised 129.4% increase in July associated with exceptionally high large orders for ships, rail vehicles, and aircraft. August orders also fell across major goods groupings: 15.3% for capital goods, 2.6% for intermediate goods, and 7.3% for consumer goods. Domestic orders declined 17.3%; foreign orders fell 5.4%, with euro-area and non-euro-area orders each down about 5.4–5.5%. Destatis provides the category breakdown and revisions.
The latest specific production release available here covers June 2026, not August. Destatis reported production in industry up 0.2% from May, down 0.1% from June 2025, and up 0.7% over April–June compared with the preceding three months. May’s monthly change was revised to +0.7% from +0.9%. These figures come from the June 2026 production release. They are not a direct counterpart to August orders: the reference months differ, and the indicators measure different economic stages.

Which comparison to use
| Comparison | What it helps show | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Month on month | Short-term movement or momentum | Use the seasonally and calendar-adjusted rate and name the reference month. |
| Three-month period against the preceding three months | A less volatile view of recent movement | State both periods and whether large-scale orders are included. |
| Year on year | Longer-run comparison of levels | Use the calendar-adjusted rate and identify the series and reference month. |
Destatis says adjusted month-on-month or quarter-on-quarter comparisons are suited to short-term trends, while calendar-adjusted year-on-year comparisons support longer-term comparisons without seasonal or calendar effects. Orders and turnover rates in the August release are price-adjusted indices with 2021 as the base year (2021=100); seasonal and calendar adjustment used X13 JDemetra+. Read the release’s methodological notes.
How to interpret a fall in production or orders
- A monthly fall in production means measured output was lower than in the previous month on the stated adjusted basis. It does not by itself establish a persistent contraction; check the three-month trend and year-on-year comparison.
- A monthly fall in orders means incoming demand in the covered branches was lower on that basis. Large contracts can make the headline unusually volatile, so inspect the series excluding large-scale orders and the three-month comparison.
- A gap between the percentages is not an order-to-output conversion rate. The measures describe different things, can cover different months and may use different comparison bases. Do not subtract one percentage from the other to infer how much demand translated into production.
For a fuller view, consider turnover and order backlog alongside orders and production. Destatis lists these related monthly indicators on its industry and manufacturing pages. The series are complements, not substitutes; verify each table’s definition and reference period.

Use Destatis releases for the cited monthly figures, then consult the underlying series when comparing periods. GENESIS-Online provides long monthly series for new orders and order backlog. Destatis says the production-index short-term-indicator page will stop being updated from October 2026 and be deactivated at the start of 2027; production data will remain available through GENESIS-Online and the Economic Dashboard.
