German Bobls are five-year federal government bonds with fixed annual coupons and repayment at par. In 2026, Germany planned €73 billion of Bobl financing through 14 auctions. One dated market reference: on 7 October 2026, the Bundesbank reported a 3.37% yield for the 2.90% Bobl maturing 8 October 2031. That yield is a snapshot, not a guaranteed return. Bobls also sit within a wider German government-securities market used as a euro-area benchmark and for collateral and risk management; the available official sources do not quantify a global impact attributable to Bobls alone.

What are German Bobl bonds?

“Bobl” is the market name for a Bundesobligation, or German Federal note. It is a nominal, fixed-rate German government security with a five-year original maturity, positioned between shorter Schatz notes and longer-maturity Bunds. The Federal Finance Agency says two new Bobl series have been issued annually since 2015. The agency’s Federal Notes overview describes the instrument and its terms.

A Bobl pays a fixed annual coupon and is redeemed at par at maturity. Its coupon is not the same as its yield: the coupon determines scheduled interest payments, while yield reflects the security’s price and cash flows at a particular time.

What was the yield on German five-year bonds in 2026?

On 7 October 2026, the Deutsche Bundesbank listed a 3.37% reference yield for the Bobl identified by ISIN DE000BU25075: a 2.90% coupon security maturing 8 October 2031. This is a dated secondary-market reference, not a forecast or a return guaranteed to an investor. The quoted yield can change as the market price changes. The Bundesbank’s October 2026 listed-securities data gives the observation.

A separate data point comes from the Finance Agency’s reopening of that October 2031 Bobl on 22 September 2026: the auction’s average yield was 3.28%, with a bid-to-cover ratio of 1.2. That auction result and the Bundesbank’s later reference yield describe different observations on different dates; neither should be presented as the yield continuously available to buyers. The Finance Agency’s issuance results report the auction result.

How do coupon, yield and realized return differ?

  • Coupon: the fixed annual interest payment set for the security. A new issue’s coupon is set shortly before issuance in line with market rates.
  • Yield: a market measure based on the security’s price and expected cash flows at a particular time. It changes as the price changes.
  • Realized return: what an investor actually earns over a chosen holding period. It depends on purchase price, sale price if sold early, accrued interest, transaction costs, taxes and the treatment of coupon payments.

A Bobl can trade above or below its par value after issuance. For an investor holding to maturity, the issuer’s par repayment does not erase the importance of the purchase price, inflation, fees, taxes, reinvestment of coupon payments or the opportunity cost of tying up money. Selling before maturity adds the effect of the market price at the time of sale. The Finance Agency’s Federal Notes information explains the instrument’s fixed-payment structure.

How do rising interest rates affect Bobl prices?

Bond prices and market yields generally move in opposite directions: when yields rise, existing fixed-coupon bond prices tend to fall; when yields fall, prices tend to rise. If an investor sells while a Bobl’s price is below the purchase price, that sale can realize a loss. Holding to maturity avoids having to sell at an interim market price, but does not guarantee that every investor will achieve the same overall return.

Price sensitivity depends in part on remaining maturity and coupon. The Finance Agency’s general guidance is that a longer remaining term and a lower coupon produce a stronger price response to interest-rate moves. This is why a five-year Bobl’s risk cannot be understood from its coupon alone. The agency classifies Bobl price risk as moderate. Its risk and product information sets out that assessment.

Are German government bonds safe?

The Finance Agency describes issuer risk for Federal securities as extremely low and characterizes them as gilt-edged. That is the issuer’s assessment, not a statement that repayment or an investor’s outcome is risk-free. Market-price movements, inflation, reinvestment, fees and taxes can still affect what an investor receives in real or after-cost terms.

The agency rates liquidity risk—the risk of being unable to sell before maturity—as very low, citing heavy trading and market maintenance by the Finance Agency and Bundesbank. Low assessed liquidity risk does not guarantee a particular sale price or execution. The source does not calculate an individual investor’s after-tax return.

How much Bobl financing was planned for 2026?

The Finance Agency planned €73 billion of Bobl financing across 14 auctions in 2026, including two new 2031 series and reopenings. This is an issuance plan, not a measure of investor demand or an indication of future yields. Auction outcomes are separate from secondary-market reference prices. How do German bond yields affect European markets?

The Finance Agency says yields on German Federal securities are regarded around the world as benchmarks for bonds from other euro-area issuers, including governments and companies. In practice, that benchmark role helps provide a reference point for pricing other debt; it does not mean a Bobl alone determines another issuer’s borrowing costs.

The agency also identifies broader roles for Federal securities: they are used as collateral in short-term interbank lending, help banks manage interest-rate risk, are deliverable securities for major euro futures contracts, and are an essential instrument in euro-area monetary-policy implementation. These are roles of the Federal-securities complex, not evidence of a measured global spillover caused specifically by Bobls. The agency’s Federal Securities overview describes these market functions.

How does a Bobl compare with a Schatz or Bund?

Security Original maturity What to consider
Schatz Two years Shorter maturity than a Bobl; compare its remaining term and price sensitivity for the intended holding period.
Bobl Five years Middle segment of the German government yield curve; the 2026 market figures above apply only to the specified security and dates.
Bund Longer original maturities Longer remaining term generally means a stronger price response to rate moves, all else equal.

The Finance Agency distinguishes these securities by maturity and notes that price response generally strengthens with longer remaining term and lower coupon. When comparing investments, use yields observed on the same date and also consider coupon, price relative to par, remaining maturity, issue size, liquidity and your holding horizon. The agency’s overview of Federal securities covers the instrument categories.

How can an individual buy or sell a Bobl?

The Finance Agency says individuals can buy or sell Federal securities, including Bobls, through a bank or another credit institution on exchange trading days. Providers generally charge transaction and custody fees; the agency says there is generally no minimum or maximum investment amount. Actual access, costs and local availability depend on the provider. Check its terms before placing an order. The agency’s Federal Notes page describes access for individual investors.
