For users, the shift is from choosing an operation and relying on its expected result to reviewing content produced by a model. That content can be useful, but a plausible answer is not proof that it is correct.
This is a comparison of tendencies, not a strict divide: conventional software can fail or include AI, and generative AI is itself software. The best choice depends on the task, the consequences of mistakes, and whether you can check and correct the result.
How is generative AI different from traditional software?
Generative AI is a class of models that produces derived synthetic content by learning patterns in input data. It can generate text, images, audio, video, and other digital content in response to a user prompt. That definition describes a capability, not a particular app or interface. NIST’s glossary defines the term using its AI 100-2e2025 publication.
Many conventional programs are built to carry out defined operations: a calculator applies arithmetic, for example, while a spreadsheet formula returns a result from specified inputs. Generative systems instead use a model to produce an output based on learned patterns and the context supplied. This can make them helpful when a task calls for a draft, suggestion, or synthesis, but less straightforward to predict or reproduce exactly.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The distinction is not that traditional software is guaranteed to be deterministic or error-free. It can have bugs, rely on changing data, and behave unexpectedly. Nor is every feature labeled “AI” generative. The useful question is what a particular system does for the task you have, and how you can evaluate its result.
What changes in everyday use?
| What you notice | Generative AI tendency | Traditional software tendency |
|---|---|---|
| Output | Creates content, such as a draft, summary, image, or suggestion, from a prompt. | Often performs a predefined operation, such as calculating, sorting, or applying a rule. |
| Predictability | Results can vary and may be difficult to predict fully, even when they sound confident. | For a stable operation and the same inputs, results are often more repeatable; bugs, changing data, or other system behavior can still affect them. |
| Checking | Important claims and recommendations need review against reliable evidence or the real-world task. | Users still need to check that inputs, settings, formulas, and outputs are appropriate; some results may be easier to verify independently. |
| Information involved | Prompts and other data may be processed by the system; consider sensitivity and privacy before entering information. | Data handling varies by product and use. Check what the software collects, stores, or shares rather than assuming it is private. |
| When something goes wrong | A fluent but inaccurate or incomplete output may be hard to spot without review; correction may require better context, verification, or a human decision. | An error may arise from a bug, configuration, or unsuitable input; diagnosis may involve checking the operation, data, or settings. |
These are practical tendencies, not ratings that apply to every product. NIST notes that AI risks can differ from or intensify traditional software risks, and that risk varies with a system’s lifecycle stage, scope, and source. NIST’s Generative AI Profile sets out that risk framing.

Why can generated output be hard to trust at a glance?
A generated response can read smoothly while being wrong, incomplete, biased, or out of date. The model’s output reflects learned patterns and the context it receives; fluency alone does not establish that the answer is true or suitable for your situation.
NIST’s comparison of AI and traditional software identifies several factors that can complicate evaluation: training data may not represent the intended context, a clear ground truth may not exist, and pretrained models can raise questions about uncertainty, bias, validity, and reproducibility. AI systems can also be more opaque, have failure modes that are difficult to anticipate, and require additional maintenance when models or concepts drift. Testing standards and practices may be less mature. These are considerations to assess for a particular system, not proof that every AI system is unsafe. NIST AI RMF 1.0, Appendix B, describes these differences.

There is no fair, general accuracy percentage that compares generative AI with traditional software across tasks. The relevant evidence depends on the product, the use case, and how success is measured. For an individual user, verify important output rather than assuming a category-wide accuracy claim.
What should you check before trusting an AI-generated answer?
- Match the tool to the task. Use generation when you need a draft or set of ideas; favor a clearly defined operation when you need a stable, repeatable result and generation adds no value.
- Check consequential claims independently. Confirm facts, calculations, citations, and instructions against authoritative sources or a qualified person before acting on them.
- Consider the cost of an error. The more harm an incorrect, biased, incomplete, or stale output could cause, the more review and oversight it needs. Do not delegate a consequential decision to an unverified answer.
- Limit sensitive input. Before entering personal, confidential, or organizational information, find out how the product processes it and whether its data practices fit your needs.
- Look for a way to review and correct. Consider whether you can inspect the output, supply missing context, identify an error, and get a qualified person to approve or challenge a consequential result.
- Recheck when the system or context changes. New data, model changes, or a different use can affect results; old confidence in a workflow is not a substitute for evaluation in its current use.
How should you choose between generative AI and conventional software?
Compare the actual options for the specific task, rather than treating “AI” and “traditional” as universal quality labels. Ask these questions before adopting a tool or relying on its output:

- Repeatability: Do you need the same input to produce a predictable result?
- Data and privacy: What information is processed, and is it appropriate to provide that information?
- Failure consequences: What happens if the result is wrong, biased, incomplete, or stale?
- Transparency and correction: Can you understand enough about the result to challenge it, correct it, or seek review?
- Human oversight: Is a person with the right expertise available to approve high-impact output?
- Maintenance: Could changes in data, the model, or the use context mean the workflow needs new testing?
For guidance on managing these risks, NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework is voluntary, not a legal requirement. NIST says the framework is being revised; its current status and purpose are described on the AI RMF page. Its FAQ says trustworthiness should be considered across pre-design, design and development, deployment, use, and testing and evaluation. For users, the practical point is to match review and oversight to the stakes, not to assume the same level of checking suits every task.
