Generative AI is changing how people discover information: instead of only choosing from ranked links, they may receive a synthesized answer with links to supporting sources. That changes where visibility happens, but it does not make search fundamentals obsolete. Google’s guidance says its generative Search features remain grounded in core Search systems and that established SEO practices still matter. For leaders, the practical response is to make useful, verifiable information accessible, build credibility beyond owned channels, and measure visibility separately from visits and business outcomes.
What changes when search answers before users click?
In conventional search, a result page presents links that users can compare and open. Generative search can assemble information into an answer and show supporting links. A company may therefore be visible as a cited source—or mentioned in an answer—without receiving a visit. Conversely, being eligible to appear does not guarantee that a system will select or cite a page.
Google describes its own generative Search features as using retrieval-augmented generation grounded in its Search index. It also describes query fan-out: for a complex request, the system may run related searches to gather relevant material. This is an explanation of Google’s Search surfaces, not a universal account of how every assistant retrieves information. Google’s official guide to generative AI features in Search says the features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems.
Google reported that AI Overviews had over 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode had surpassed one billion monthly users in an announcement published June 3, 2026, and updated August 31, 2026. These are Google’s company-reported figures for its own features, not independent measurements of all generative search products. Google’s announcement provides the figures and describes new controls for website owners.

Is SEO still relevant, and what should teams optimize?
Yes. For Google’s generative Search features, Google’s position is that optimization remains grounded in core SEO. The durable work is not a separate set of guaranteed “AEO” or “GEO” tricks; it is making valuable information findable, understandable, accurate, and useful to people. Google’s guidance cautions that many proposed generative-search hacks are ineffective or unsupported.
Make the source worth citing
- Publish original research, first-hand experience, expert explanations, and specific evidence that adds something beyond a generic summary.
- Keep important company facts, product explanations, and expertise accurate and easy to verify.
- Use clear page structure and descriptive language so people and search systems can understand what a page covers.
- Support useful written material with high-quality images or video when they genuinely help explain the subject.
Google’s Search Central May 15, 2026 resource announcement reiterates the emphasis on useful content and page experience. These practices can improve the quality and accessibility of a site; they cannot guarantee a ranking, citation, or referral.
Keep technical access and experience in scope
Have web and SEO teams check that important pages can be crawled and indexed, that page structure communicates the subject clearly, and that the experience works for visitors. Treat accessibility, accuracy, and usability as product-quality work rather than as a special markup recipe for AI. The cited Google guidance does not establish a magic schema, wording pattern, or technical switch that guarantees generative visibility.

Generative answers can draw on material beyond a company’s own website, so communications work affects whether authoritative, accurate information about the organization is available elsewhere. A 2025 comparative research paper reported that source mixes differed by engine and language; in its tested cases, generative AI search relied more on earned and third-party sources than the study’s traditional Google results. That finding is specific to the paper’s dataset and methods, not a universal source-selection formula. The comparative study supports treating independent credibility as a consideration, not trying to manufacture mentions.

Communications teams can make expertise easier to assess by ensuring that company facts, evidence, and expert explanations are clear and consistent. Pursue substantive coverage and useful expert contributions rather than mass-produced brand mentions or speculative citation tactics. The goal is trustworthy public information; no volume of outreach guarantees selection by an answer system.
How should leaders measure visibility, traffic, and business impact?
Do not collapse the funnel into one “AI visibility” score. A mention, a linked citation, a search impression, a website session, and a qualified opportunity are different outcomes. Google’s Search Console reporting is specific to Google’s Search features, not a cross-platform standard. Its generative AI performance report documentation explains what Google reports.
Rank #4
- Set a baseline. Where available, record the Search Console generative AI report’s visibility measures and reporting period. Keep it distinct from data about other assistants.
- Track the visit. Use first-party analytics to evaluate clicks and visits, including whether visitors reach relevant pages and engage with them.
- Connect to business outcomes. Use CRM and sales data to assess qualified leads, opportunities, and pipeline. Test whether referrals from generative features behave differently; the evidence reviewed does not establish an across-industry conversion advantage.
- Segment before interpreting. Compare platform, market and language, answer surface, content type, visibility, click-through, and business outcome where the data allows.
- Document measurement limits. Note what counts as a mention or citation, which engines and regions are covered, how often observations update, and whether teams can inspect the surfaced page or source.
A preregistered 2026 field experiment with 1,100 participants reported more publisher clicks when AI Overviews and AI Mode were removed. Its abstract also reports that an AI Mode-only condition reduced click-through and eroded user experience and trust in information found on Google. These results describe that experiment’s setup; they are not a universal forecast of traffic effects for every publisher or market. The paper’s abstract and methods provide its scope.
Should a publisher allow its pages in Google’s generative features?
Google provides a Search generative AI control for publishers. As of August 31, 2026, Google said the control was available worldwide and inclusion was the default. Excluding content prevents it and its links from appearing in the covered generative features, and removes impressions and traffic from those features; Google says the setting does not affect ranking in other Search areas. Check Google’s control documentation for the current scope and behavior.
This is a trade-off, not a universal recommendation. Eligibility may provide a chance to appear as a supporting link, while an answer may satisfy some users without a site visit. Website owners should decide deliberately whether participation aligns with their goals, then allow for propagation time after changing the setting. Reassess using observed visibility and referral outcomes rather than assuming either inclusion or exclusion guarantees a preferred result.

| Team | Near-term action | What to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing and web | Audit crawlability, page structure, accuracy, and user experience; prioritize original, useful material. | Whether important pages are accessible and answer real audience questions with distinctive information. |
| Communications and PR | Make authoritative company facts and expert explanations easy to find and verify; pursue substantive third-party credibility. | Accuracy and quality of public information, not raw mention volume. |
| Sales | Work with analytics to examine leads and opportunities associated with generative-search referrals. | Qualified visits and pipeline outcomes; do not assume AI referrals convert better. |
| Analytics | Establish a Google-specific baseline where reporting is available and connect it to first-party analytics and CRM data. | Visibility, clicks, qualified visits, branded demand, and business outcomes as separate measures. |
| Web or publisher owners | Review Google’s inclusion control against the organization’s objectives. | The value of generative-feature eligibility versus the risk of fewer visits when answers satisfy users. |
| Executive team | Coordinate SEO, communications, product marketing, and analytics around a shared measurement plan. | Performance by platform and market rather than one universal AI-visibility KPI. |
How to evaluate an AI-visibility proposal
Monitoring tools and services do not measure the same thing by default. Before adopting a score, report, or vendor claim, ask:
- Which engines, countries, languages, and answer surfaces are included?
- Does the method count a brand mention, a cited link, an impression, a visit, or a qualified business outcome?
- Can the team inspect which pages or sources were surfaced, and how repeatable is the measurement?
- How often is the data updated, and what limitations affect its coverage?
- Does the proposed action improve usefulness, accuracy, accessibility, or independent credibility—or depend on an unsupported hack?
Google’s own report and inclusion control provide Google-specific information. Comparative research indicates that source patterns can differ across engines. A platform-by-platform scorecard is therefore a practical leadership choice, not a universal reporting standard.
