You can connect MCP servers to VS Code, but first identify the server and confirm its actual tools. This guide shows how to configure and assess a server without confusing video generation, PDF viewing, and image input with three-format generation.
What “generating video, PDFs, and images with the VS Code MCP server” actually means
VS Code does not itself provide a universal media-generation MCP server. Microsoft describes MCP as “an open standard for connecting AI models to external tools and services.” In practice, an MCP server exposes capabilities to an agent in the host application; the specific server and the services behind it determine what the agent can do. That distinction matters because related media actions are not interchangeable:

- Generate a still image: create an image file as an output. Supplying an image as an input to video generation does not establish this capability.
- Create a PDF: produce or export a PDF file. Viewing a PDF or returning an image of one page is not PDF creation.
The available examples support a particular video integration and a separate PDF-viewing extension. They do not establish a single server—or a complete VS Code workflow—that generates all three formats.
What the documented examples can do
Luma MCP: video tools
The Visual Studio Marketplace listing for Luma MCP describes tools to generate video from text, generate video from an image, and extend an existing video. The listing describes a hosted service endpoint and an API key requirement. Those capabilities are specific to the Luma integration; they do not establish that it generates still images or PDFs.
AeroPDF: view and screenshot PDF pages
The Marketplace listing for AeroPDF describes a PDF viewer and a tool that returns a page screenshot. That is useful for inspecting a document page, but the listing does not establish PDF generation or editing, nor a connection to Luma’s video tools.

Still-image generation: not established by these examples
The Luma listing’s image-to-video capability makes an image an input; it is not evidence that the integration creates still images. The cited material does not establish an image-generation MCP server or image-output workflow for VS Code. To claim that a server creates still images, check its current documentation for an image-generation tool and an output format or saved-file behavior.

VS Code supports installation from its MCP gallery and manual configuration. Servers can be configured for a workspace or for a user profile; the configuration location affects where the server is available and runs. The official documentation covers the current setup paths and configuration details, so follow it for the exact UI available in your VS Code version.
- Identify the server and publisher. Open its official documentation or Marketplace entry. Confirm the tool names, outputs, hosting model, required credentials, and the publisher before installing it.
- Choose the scope. Use workspace configuration when the server belongs to a particular project; use your user profile when it should be available across projects. VS Code uses
.vscode/mcp.jsonfor its configuration format and also documents a portable.mcp.jsonformat. - Install from the MCP gallery or configure it manually. In the gallery, select a server and follow its setup flow. For manual configuration, use the server’s own documented command, arguments, environment variables, and transport. Do not copy a configuration from an unrelated server.
- Supply credentials only as documented. For the Luma Marketplace example, the listing says an API key is required for its hosted service. Keep keys out of committed workspace files and follow the service’s credential guidance.
- Review the server’s tools before invoking them. Check what each action sends, changes, or creates. The VS Code MCP guide notes that tool confirmation behavior depends on metadata: confirmation is shown for tools not marked with the
readOnlyHintannotation. - Test one task at a time. Verify that the server starts, that its tools appear in chat, and that one specific action produces the expected kind of output before relying on it for a workflow.
VS Code’s configuration reference also describes portable configuration and Agent Host behavior. In particular, forwarded configurations that require interactive input may be excluded, so do not assume a configuration behaves identically in every host. Choose a server by the job, not by the media label

For any candidate, verify four things in its current listing or documentation: what output it creates, whether it runs locally or calls a hosted service, what credentials it requires, and which VS Code host/configuration scopes it supports. MCP supports different transports—including local stdio, remote Streamable HTTP, and legacy SSE—but a server’s actual transport is server-specific.
Security and reliability checks before use
A local MCP server is executable code, not merely a settings entry. Microsoft warns that local servers can run arbitrary code and recommends reviewing the publisher and configuration before starting one. Treat remote servers as external services too: their tools may transmit prompts, source material, or files to a hosted endpoint.
- Install only a server whose publisher and source you can verify.
- Read its configuration before starting it; check commands, arguments, environment variables, and endpoints.
- Understand whether a tool uploads input to a hosted service and what credentials it uses.
- Review the requested action before approving a tool call, especially actions that create, modify, or transmit files.
- Check the current VS Code documentation for sandbox availability and platform limits before relying on sandboxing; support may vary by platform and version.
For a media workflow, reliability also depends on the backing service, network access, and credentials. A visible MCP tool is not proof that a request succeeded: inspect the tool result and confirm the expected file or page is actually available.

Troubleshooting MCP media workflows
The server does not appear in VS Code chat
- Confirm you installed or configured it in the intended workspace or user profile.
- Check the server’s documented transport and startup command against the configuration you entered.
- Review VS Code’s MCP server status and logs, then correct configuration errors and restart the server.
- If you use Agent Host or a portable configuration, check whether interactive-input settings are excluded when configurations are forwarded.
The tool asks for credentials or fails authentication
- Check the server’s own documentation for the required credential name and setup method.
- For Luma MCP, the Marketplace listing specifies an API key for its hosted service. Verify that the key is present in the location the integration expects and that it is valid.
- Do not paste secrets into chat or commit them to a shared workspace file.
A video request accepts an image, but no image is created
Image-to-video means the image is an input to a video task. It does not establish a still-image generation tool. Use an integration whose documentation explicitly describes still-image output.
A PDF tool returns a page image instead of a PDF file
A page screenshot is a visual representation of a page, not a generated or edited PDF. Confirm that the tool’s documented output is a PDF file before treating it as a document-creation workflow.
A tool is blocked or asks for confirmation
Read the tool description and review the requested action. VS Code’s MCP guide explains that confirmation behavior depends on tool metadata, including the readOnlyHint annotation. Do not bypass a prompt without understanding the operation.
