Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To save a webpage screenshot from headless Chrome, run chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,900 https://example.com/. Chrome writes a PNG named screenshot.png in the command’s current working directory. Replace chrome with the executable name or full path used by your installation.
Take a screenshot from the command line
- Open a terminal and change to the folder where you want the image saved. Chrome saves the default file in the current working directory, not necessarily beside the webpage or your terminal configuration.
- Run this command, replacing the URL with the page you want to capture:
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,900 https://example.com/ - Look for
screenshot.pngin that folder. The--window-sizevalue sets the viewport dimensions in pixels; change the width and height to suit the layout you need.
Chrome’s command-line reference documents --screenshot as saving screenshot.png in the current working directory and shows --window-size=412,892 as an example. See the Chrome Headless command-line reference for current flag details. The command uses Chrome’s headless mode, so it does not open a visible browser window.
Choose the viewport and wait time
Set the capture dimensions
Use --window-size=WIDTH,HEIGHT to specify the viewport—for example, --window-size=1280,900. A viewport screenshot shows the page as rendered within those dimensions; it does not by itself establish that the entire length of a long page is included.
Allow a bounded wait
If the page needs extra time to load, add --timeout with a value in milliseconds, such as --timeout=5000:

chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,900 --timeout=5000 https://example.com/
Chrome documents this as a maximum wait before it captures output, even if the page is still loading. It is not a guarantee that a site’s delayed scripts, images, animations, or other asynchronous elements have finished. Inspect the resulting image and adjust the wait as needed.

Know what the basic screenshot command captures
The basic CLI command is suited to a screenshot at a chosen viewport. The current command-line reference does not provide a complete recipe for capturing an entire long page. Older Chrome Headless shell documentation says full-page capture takes additional work and is marked deprecated; it is useful for context, not as the preferred current command reference. Chrome’s newer Headless mode has been available since Chrome 112. See the current command-line reference and the older Headless shell page.
For full-document capture or more precise control over navigation and readiness, use browser automation such as Puppeteer rather than assuming the basic CLI flag captures everything. Automation requires a script, but lets you define more of the capture process. The available Chrome documentation identifies Puppeteer as a programmatic option; it does not establish a particular current API recipe here.

Use --dump-dom only when you need serialized page markup
--dump-dom is not a screenshot flag and does not simply fetch the original HTML source. Chrome parses the page, runs scripts that may alter the DOM, then serializes the resulting DOM. Use --screenshot for an image; use --dump-dom when the serialized DOM is what you need.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The command says Chrome was not found: the executable may have a different name or may not be on your
PATH. Find the Chrome executable for your operating system and substitute its name or full path. - You cannot find the image: check the terminal’s current working directory. The default output is
screenshot.pngthere. - The screenshot has the wrong dimensions: set an explicit
--window-size=WIDTH,HEIGHTand rerun the command. - The page looks incomplete: try a longer
--timeout, then inspect again. A fixed wait cannot ensure that site-specific asynchronous content or animations are ready. - The image omits the lower part of a long page: the basic documented CLI recipe is not a complete full-page workflow. Use browser automation if you need full-page capture or finer readiness controls.
Or skip the browser setup
