Gemini Temporary Chat reduces what appears in your Gemini history, but it does not make Google forget the conversation immediately. Google says Temporary Chats do not appear in Gemini Apps Activity or recent chats and are not used to train its AI models. Google also says it retains them with your account for 72 hours to provide responses and protect Google, users, and the public.
What Gemini Temporary Chat actually changes
Temporary Chat is a per-conversation privacy mode for signed-in users with personal Google Accounts. Google describes it as a way to discuss information you do not want Gemini to remember or use for personalization.
- The conversation does not appear in Gemini Apps Activity.
- It does not appear in your recent chats.
- Google says Temporary Chats are not used to train its AI models.
- Google retains the chat with your account for 72 hours for response and safety purposes.
Google’s help page says you lose access to the chat after leaving it. That is a change to the user-facing history, not proof that all copies are erased at that moment.
How long Google retains a Temporary Chat
According to Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, Temporary Chats are retained with your account for 72 hours. Google says this retention supports responding to the conversation and protecting Google, its users, and the public, including handling system-failure scenarios.

Google also says it uses the last 24 hours of the chat as context when responding. Google’s published policy periods do not establish that every technical copy disappears exactly at the 72-hour mark.
Temporary Chat versus other Gemini privacy controls
| Control | History visibility | Retention and use | Features and caveats |
|---|---|---|---|
| Temporary Chat | Not shown in Gemini Apps Activity or recent chats. | Retained with the account for 72 hours for response and safety; Google says it is not used to train its AI models. | Does not support Memory, personalized responses, Gems, some Connected Apps or integrated services that require Keep Activity, or response feedback. |
| Keep Activity off | Future chats are not saved in Gemini Apps Activity in the normal way. | Google says chats remain with the account for up to 72 hours. They are not used to improve AI models if you do not submit feedback. | If you submit feedback, Google may collect the feedback, the last 24 hours of context, and content in those chats, including uploads and Connected Apps data, to maintain and improve Gemini Apps. |
| Memory off | Does not by itself remove a chat from history. | Controls whether Gemini uses saved information from past chats for personalization. | Memory requires a personal account, age 18 or older, and Keep Activity on. Turning it off is separate from Temporary Chat. |
| Delete a past chat | Removes the chat from recent chats and the related Gemini Apps Activity, according to Google. | Some data reviewed by human reviewers or retained for legal or business reasons can follow different periods. | Deletion in Gemini does not delete activity stored by other Google services. |
How to start a Temporary Chat
- Sign in with a personal Google Account.
- Open gemini.google.com or the Gemini mobile app.
- Open the menu and choose Temporary chat next to New chat.
- Enter your prompt and submit it.
Google documents the feature for the Gemini web and mobile apps. It is not available for work or school accounts, Gemini in Chrome, or Gemini in Google Messages. Interface labels and eligibility can change, and managed-account administrators may impose additional controls.
What you give up when using Temporary Chat
Temporary Chat is deliberately narrower than a normal personalized Gemini conversation. Google says the mode cannot use:
- Memory and saved information from past chats for personalization.
- Personalized responses based on your account history.
- Gems.
- Some Connected Apps and integrated services that require Keep Activity.
- Response feedback.
Choose it when keeping a one-off conversation out of Gemini history matters more than continuity, saved preferences, or integrations.
The feedback exception when Keep Activity is off
Keep Activity off is not identical to Temporary Chat. Google says chats made while Keep Activity is off are not used to improve its AI models when you do not submit feedback. If you do submit feedback, Google may collect and use the feedback, the last 24 hours of chat context, and content in those chats—including uploads and Connected Apps data—to maintain and improve Gemini Apps.
That conditional rule is why “Keep Activity off means nothing is ever used” is too broad. Temporary Chat has Google’s separate stated no-training policy, but it still has the 72-hour service and safety retention.

What ordinary Gemini history and deletion can retain
For ordinary Gemini Apps activity, Google’s Privacy Hub describes an auto-delete setting with an 18-month default. Users can choose 3 months, 36 months, or indefinite retention. Google also says chats reviewed by human reviewers and related data may be retained for up to three years even after activity is deleted, and some information may be kept longer for legitimate business or legal purposes.
Those longer periods describe the broader Gemini Apps data policy and should not be read as a claim that every Temporary Chat follows each category. For account-activity controls, see Manage & delete your activity in Gemini Apps.

Memory, deletion, and other Google services are separate
Memory and personalization
Google’s Memory help page says Memory requires a personal account, age 18 or older, and Keep Activity on. You can switch Memory off, but deleting a chat may take a short time to stop influencing personalization.
Deleting a previous chat
Google says deleting a chat from recent chats also deletes the related Gemini Apps Activity. Google’s Privacy Hub notes that reviewer-retained data and records held for legal or business reasons can have different retention. Details about recent-chat management are in Find & manage your recent chats in Gemini Apps.
Connected Google products
Gemini settings do not change settings in other Google products. Data saved by services such as connected applications can be handled under those services’ own policies, and deleting Gemini Apps Activity does not itself delete that separate activity. Temporary Chat therefore does not disable Web & App Activity, Location History, connected-service records, or every other Google data process.
Does Temporary Chat stop Google saving your chats?
No—not immediately or absolutely. It stops the conversation from appearing in your Gemini history and gives it Google’s stated no-training treatment, but Google says it retains the chat for 72 hours for service and safety purposes. Use Temporary Chat for reduced history and personalization exposure, not as a guarantee of instant deletion or complete privacy.
