Gemini in desktop Chrome can use the page you are viewing by default, and you can choose to share up to 10 additional open tabs. It does not automatically get every tab in every browser window: you select the extra pages, and the interface marks tabs that are being shared. You can remove a shared tab or turn off default sharing of the current tab.
Google’s documentation explains the feature and its controls, but it does not establish what a particular person experienced over a week. So this guide sticks to verified behavior rather than inventing a personal trial or claiming that Gemini changed anyone’s browsing habits.
Can Gemini read my open tabs in Chrome?
On desktop, Gemini in Chrome can use content from your current tab to answer a question. Google says the current tab is shared by default. To bring other pages into the conversation, you choose them; you can add up to 10 recent open tabs across browser windows. Shared tabs are marked in the interface. See Google’s Gemini in Chrome help page for the current instructions and availability details.
That distinction matters: “read my open tabs” does not mean Gemini automatically sees every page you have open. The current page is the default context, while additional tabs require your selection.

What happens when I let Gemini use my tabs?
Your question can be answered using content from the page or pages you have shared. Google gives examples such as summarizing an article, explaining a difficult topic, comparing information across pages, and making recommendations based on preferences. Those are examples of intended uses, not a guarantee that every page will be understood correctly or that every response will be useful.
For a comparison, select the relevant pages and ask a focused question about them—for example, what the pages say about a particular feature or how their recommendations differ. Check important details against the original pages rather than treating a generated summary as authoritative.

How to share or stop sharing tabs
Use Gemini in Chrome’s tab-sharing controls to select the additional pages you want included. The current tab is shared by default unless you change the setting. Google’s help documentation describes removing a shared tab and changing the “Share current tab by default” setting when starting a new chat.

- To add context: select the open tabs relevant to your question, up to the 10-additional-tab limit.
- To stop sharing a page: remove that tab from the shared-tab selection.
- To change the default: adjust “Share current tab by default” when starting a new chat.
Check the interface’s shared-tab indicators before asking a question, especially if you have several windows open or the pages contain information you do not want included in the conversation.

Tab sharing is different from history search and auto browse
Open-tab questions
Ordinary questions about selected page content use the current tab and any additional tabs you chose to share. This is the feature described above.
Chrome-history search
A separate Gemini in Chrome feature can search synced Chrome history to help find a page you visited earlier. Google says it requires opting in, an up-to-date Chrome version, a personal Google Account, and synced history; it is unavailable in Incognito mode. It searches history rather than simply adding every past page to the current chat. Details are in Google’s Chrome history search help page.

Auto browse
Auto browse is a distinct feature for multi-step tasks, such as researching products or arranging travel. Unlike asking a question about selected tab content, it can interact with websites. Google lists additional eligibility conditions and warns that auto browse may use personal information and may share it with a website during a task. Review Google’s auto browse help page before using it, particularly for tasks involving sites where you are signed in.
Who can use Gemini in Chrome?
Gemini in Chrome requires opting in. Google’s desktop eligibility criteria include age, supported region, a Chromebook Plus, Mac, or Windows computer, an up-to-date Chrome version, sign-in, and a supported device language. Work or school accounts may need an administrator to enable access. Google describes availability as a gradual rollout, so eligibility does not necessarily mean the feature is already available to every account in every location.
