Gemini Computer Use is a supervised action loop, not a hosted browser. Your application sends Gemini a task and the current screenshot, receives a proposed UI action, checks its safety result, executes an allowed (or user-confirmed) action in a browser such as Playwright, captures the next screenshot, and sends that image back. You provide the browser, isolation, credentials, permissions, and recovery logic.
This guide focuses on browser automation with the Gemini API and the current Computer Use documentation. Model names and availability change; verify the live Gemini model list before deploying.
What Gemini Computer Use actually does
Computer Use lets a Gemini model interpret pixels and propose interface operations such as clicking, typing, scrolling or pressing a key. Gemini does not launch Chrome, hold your session, or execute those operations. Your client must perform each action and report the resulting screen.
For Gemini 3.x responses, the action can include an intent explaining what the model is trying to do and a safety_decision. Treat that decision as input to your policy: allow, ask the user to confirm, or stop when blocked. The documented browser examples use Playwright, but any automation tool that can take screenshots and perform equivalent actions can fill the role.

The request/response loop
- Define the task. State the objective and boundaries (for example, “fill this test form; do not submit payment”).
- Capture the current viewport. Save a screenshot at the same viewport size your executor will use.
- Send task, screenshot and Computer Use configuration to Gemini through the API.
- Parse the proposed function call. Read the action type, normalized coordinates or text, plus
intentandsafety_decisionwhen present. - Apply policy. Execute only allowed actions. Pause for explicit user confirmation when your policy requires it; terminate blocked actions.
- Scale coordinates and execute. Gemini coordinates are normalized; convert them to the actual viewport dimensions before clicking.
- Capture a fresh screenshot after the browser settles, then return it as a function result.
- Repeat until a verified success condition, a user stop, a timeout or an error.
Do not infer completion merely because the model stopped proposing actions. Verify a URL, visible success message, downloaded file, or other application-specific condition.
Architecture and prerequisites
Isolated execution
Run the browser in a sandboxed VM or container with a disposable profile. Restrict outbound network access where possible, mount only the files needed for the task, and keep API keys and cookies outside prompts and screenshots. A compromised page can attempt prompt injection or manipulate the model into unsafe actions.
Browser controller
Install Playwright (or an equivalent tool), pin a browser version for repeatability, and set a fixed viewport. Your controller needs functions for mouse movement and clicks, keyboard input, scrolling, waiting, screenshots, navigation and downloads.
Application policy
Build an allow-list for domains, actions and sensitive fields. The Interactions API documents policy categories including financial transactions, sensitive-data modification, communication tools, account creation, data modification, user-consent management, and legal terms and agreements. A category control is not proof that an action is safe; your application still decides what to permit.

Model selection and availability
The Computer Use guide currently recommends gemini-3.8-flash and also lists Gemini 3.7 Flash, Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite, Gemini 3.5 Flash, Gemini 3 Flash Preview and Gemini 2.5 Computer Use Preview. The separate model page describes Gemini 2.5 Computer Use Preview as a specialized endpoint. This list is not permanent: Preview models can have billing and tighter rate limits and may be deprecated with at least two weeks’ notice. Check Google’s Computer Use guide and model page immediately before release.
A Playwright action executor (Python)
The following controller is runnable once your model client supplies an action dictionary. It deliberately keeps the Gemini request separate because Google’s request fields and SDKs change; use the current Computer Use guide for that call. The executor accepts normalized coordinates (0–1), performs a conservative action, and returns a new screenshot.

Never execute arbitrary function-call fields without validating types, coordinate ranges, text destinations and the target origin.
Safety, confirmation and recovery
High-impact actions
Require a human confirmation immediately before irreversible operations: purchases, account creation, sending messages, deleting or modifying records, accepting legal terms, changing consent, or exposing sensitive data. Show the intended target, fields and final values—not just “allow action.”

Prompt injection and hostile pages
Web content is untrusted input. Do not let text inside a page override your system policy. Keep secrets out of screenshots, redact sensitive regions where feasible, and stop if the page asks for credentials or instructions outside the declared task.
Coordinate and state errors
Re-capture after navigation, modal dialogs, viewport changes or scrolling. Reject coordinates outside the viewport. If an action fails, take a diagnostic screenshot, inspect the URL and visible error, and either retry with a bounded count or terminate. Do not blindly repeat a click that could submit a form twice.
Timeouts and idempotency
Set per-action and overall deadlines. Prefer idempotent operations and record every proposed and executed action with its safety outcome. A resumable task should reopen a known page and verify state before continuing.

Performance, reliability and cost considerations
Each screenshot round trip adds model latency and image-transfer cost. Reduce unnecessary turns with clear success criteria, stable pages and targeted waits, but do not skip screenshots after state-changing actions. Keep screenshots at the smallest resolution that still exposes the controls, and avoid sending duplicate frames when nothing changed.
