The catch: it does not provide live traffic updates, and the feature depends on your account settings. Some linked map features are still rolling out, too.
What Gemini’s Google Maps connection can do
When you ask about a place, Gemini Apps can draw on public information from Google Maps to find businesses, stores, restaurants, parks and attractions. It can return details such as an address, description, website, rating or opening hours, and provide directions for a chosen travel mode. Google also documents help with avoiding tolls.
For example, you can ask, “Where’s the closest coffee shop and what time does it open?” or ask how long it takes to walk between two landmarks. To find a park, you might ask for one with a playground within a 10-minute drive. These are examples of place lookup and directions, not a promise that Gemini can answer every local question. Google’s Gemini Apps Help page describes the feature and its limits.
What you need to use it
- Sign in to Gemini Apps.
- Turn on Gemini Apps Activity.
- Allow device location access if you want Gemini to use your device’s location. Gemini uses that location only with permission.
Google says this feature is not available in Gemini Live chats or Gemini in Google Messages. The Help page does not provide a complete country-by-country availability list.

What the connection cannot do
The Gemini Apps connection is useful for place discovery and directions, but it is not a substitute for all Google Maps features. Google lists these limitations:
- It does not provide live traffic updates.
- It cannot save location history.
- It cannot use your saved places, except for Work or Home.
- It cannot add a review to a place.
In particular, directions from Gemini should not be treated as live, traffic-aware routing: Google explicitly says live traffic updates are unavailable through this connection.

Which map features may still be rolling out?
Google says additional place-detail and interactive-map features are gradually releasing, so documented actions may not appear for every user yet. The Help page describes opening a place page from a linked place name or preview card, viewing an interactive map of mentioned places, and exporting pinned places to a custom Google Maps list.
For those additional features, Google specifies that users must be at least 18, signed in with a personal Google Account, and asking about a place in English. Those conditions apply to the gradually releasing features; they should not be read as a country-by-country rollout announcement for every Gemini Maps capability.

How this differs from Ask Maps and Gemini navigation
Google has also announced Gemini-powered features that appear inside Google Maps. They are separate from asking Gemini Apps to look up places, and their capabilities or availability should not be assumed to apply to the Gemini Apps connection.
| Experience | Where it appears | What Google describes | Availability statement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini Apps place search | Gemini Apps | Place information and directions using public Google Maps information; some linked map actions are gradually releasing. | Ask Maps | Google Maps | A conversational experience for complex place and outing questions, recommendations, comparing travel options using traffic conditions and estimated arrival times, and actions such as saving places, booking reservations or starting directions. | In its March 12, 2026 announcement, Google said Ask Maps was beginning to roll out in English in the U.S. and India on Android and iOS, with Hindi “launching soon.” This is Ask Maps’ rollout statement, not the Gemini Apps feature’s availability. Google later announced Gemini navigation for walking and cycling. | Google’s November 5, 2025 announcement said rollout was underway on Android and iOS wherever Gemini was available, with Android Auto “on the way.” On January 29, 2026, Google said walking and cycling navigation was rolling out worldwide on iOS and Android wherever Gemini was available. Google’s March 2026 Ask Maps announcement said Maps analyzes information about “over 300 million places” and draws on a community of “more than 500 million contributors globally.” Those are Google-published figures describing Ask Maps’ context; they are not independent measurements or proof of the exact data pathway used by Gemini Apps.
Quick Recap
How to get useful results
- In Gemini Apps, ask a direct question about a place, such as “Where’s the closest coffee shop and what time does it open?”
- For a route, name the starting point and destination, then specify how you want to travel—for example, walking or driving.
- If you need a nearby result, say whether to use your current location. Allow location permission if you want Gemini to use the device’s location.
- Check the result in Google Maps when you need a feature Gemini Apps does not provide, such as live traffic updates or access to saved places other than Work and Home.
