The Crimson Omen is Gears of War’s best-known franchise icon, but it is not the same thing as a soldier’s COG tags or a Locust faction emblem. Official sources identify the Omen’s uses, show COG tags as personal identification, and explain the Locust’s story context. They do not provide a complete canon glossary defining every emblem’s shape or origin.
What does the Crimson Omen mean?
The Crimson Omen is Gears of War’s recognizable series icon. The Xbox Store calls it “Gears of War’s most recognizable icon” in its Lancer Omen weapon-skin listing. In Gears of War: E-Day, it also appears as part of the center-screen damage cue; the game’s limited-edition controller design places it beneath a cracked-surface and E-hole motif.
Those sources establish how the Omen is used—as franchise branding and a visual element in the game—but do not establish a definitive in-world origin or say that it is interchangeable with COG tags. It is safest to call it the Crimson Omen or the series icon rather than label it a COG tag or a Locust emblem.
What red means in E-Day
E-Day art director Aryan Hanbeck explains the game’s red visual language in an official Xbox Podcast discussion: “We try to avoid using red anywhere else as much as we could. And we’d keep it as primary and strong as we can, which is kind of a bit of a challenge because it’s not an easy color to work with. But basically, whenever you see red like this in the game, it’s either an E-hole or it’s danger.” That is a design explanation specific to E-Day, not a complete account of the older icon’s fictional origin or a universal rule for every use of red in the series.

What do COG and COG tags represent?
COG stands for Coalition of Ordered Governments. COG tags are physical identification tags associated with its soldiers, not another name for the Crimson Omen. The E-Day Collector’s Edition announcement describes replica tags engraved with Carlos Santiago’s name and an “ES” mark for the Embry Star commendation.
The same collector-edition coverage presents the COG oath line, “I shall hold my place in the machine.” Read as an expression of service and collective duty, the line fits the tags’ association with individual soldiers serving within the Coalition; that reading is interpretation, rather than a separately stated official definition of a symbol.
What does the Locust symbol mean?
The Locust Horde is the opposing force that rises on Emergence Day and threatens humanity, as described on the official Gears of War franchise page. The material reviewed here does not define a single canonical meaning for the geometry of a Locust emblem. It does not establish that the shape represents a particular creature, political doctrine, or set of ideas, so those interpretations should not be presented as confirmed lore.

What is Imulsion, and is it a symbol?
Imulsion is a fictional bio-fuel in the Gears setting and a substance connected to Locust experimentation. The developer blog on enemies describes Ukkon using it in experiments; a second developer post says Imulsion-injected units include powerful Disciples and Zealots, while failed or unstable experiments can produce more savage, less obedient Deviants.
These story uses can make Imulsion suggest hazardous power, mutation, or exploitation, but those are interpretations of its narrative role—not an official symbol definition. The sources cited here do not establish a standalone canonical Imulsion emblem, so it should not be treated as a fourth faction logo alongside the Omen, COG identification, and Locust imagery.

How the symbols and imagery differ
| Item | What it identifies or represents | What official sources establish |
|---|---|---|
| Crimson Omen | Gears of War franchise icon; also used as a game visual and damage cue. | The Xbox Store calls it the series’ most recognizable icon; E-Day design material connects red with E-holes or danger. Its definitive in-world origin is not stated in these sources. |
| COG tags | Identification associated with individual COG soldiers. | The E-Day Collector’s Edition includes replica Carlos Santiago tags bearing his name and an “ES” Embry Star commendation mark. |
| Locust imagery | Faction identification for the Horde opposing humanity. | Official material establishes the Locust’s Emergence Day role, but does not define a canonical meaning for the emblem’s shape. |
| Imulsion | A fictional bio-fuel and substance used in Locust experimentation. | Developer material connects it to enhanced units and unstable experiments; it does not establish a standalone Imulsion emblem. |
Where these designs appear
The symbols turn up in both games and physical products. The E-Day Collector’s Edition includes replica COG tags. The E-Day Limited Edition Xbox Wireless Controller announcement shows a design incorporating the Crimson Omen and a COG tag. Xbox Wire announced a $89.99 preorder price in August 2026; that is the announcement price, not confirmation of today’s price or availability.
