Gears of War: E-Day belongs at the beginning of the story: it is set 14 years before the original Gears of War. Gears of War: Judgment is another early-story entry, described by the official franchise site as taking place in the immediate aftermath of Emergence Day. Those anchors clarify where the prequels fit, but they do not establish a definitive chronological slot for every spin-off.
Gears of War story order: what is established
- Gears of War: E-Day — The Coalition describes this as a new mainline origin-story entry set 14 years before the original Gears of War. The official announcement establishes that relationship, rather than a specific calendar year for the game’s events.
- Gears of War: Judgment — The official franchise homepage places it in the immediate aftermath of Emergence Day. That makes it an early-story game, but the description is a broad timeline anchor, not a complete chronology for the franchise.
- Gears of War — The original game is 14 years after the events that E-Day depicts.
- Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3, Gears of War 4 and Gears 5 — The official franchise catalog identifies these as numbered entries. Playing them in numerical order is a straightforward way to follow the numbered series; the material available here does not provide a complete, date-by-date chronology for every title.
Gears Tactics is also part of the franchise catalog, but the official material cited here does not establish its precise place in the timeline. It is better to leave its chronological slot open than to present an unverified sequence as official.

How to choose an order
For the broad story chronology
Start with E-Day for the origin-era story, then treat Judgment as an early entry set in Emergence Day’s immediate aftermath. The original Gears of War takes place 14 years after E-Day. This is a useful broad outline, not a fully verified ordering of every spin-off.
For a first playthrough
Play the numbered games in numerical order: Gears of War, Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3, Gears of War 4 and Gears 5. Add Judgment or Gears Tactics if you want to explore the wider catalog; the sources cited here do not establish a complete release-date list, so the franchise homepage’s display order should not be mistaken for one.
