For solo players drawn to Emergence Day and a return to classic Gears action, choose Gears of War: E-Day. If you want Kait Diaz’s story, choose Gears 5. Xbox confirms E-Day can be played solo, but the available reviews do not establish a definitive solo-only winner. The better fit depends on which story and style of campaign you want.
What changes when you play solo?
Both games offer campaigns that can be played alone, but their stories have different leads and premises. Xbox describes E-Day as the story of young Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago as the Locust attack begins, fourteen years before the original Gears of War. Gears 5 follows Kait Diaz as she investigates her connection to the enemy. Xbox’s E-Day listing explicitly confirms solo campaign play; its Gears 5 listing describes Kait’s campaign and confirms campaign co-op.

Co-op limits describe options for playing with others; they do not demonstrate how well either campaign is balanced for solo play or establish the quality of companion AI. Xbox’s E-Day preview says online co-op requires a Game Pass subscription that includes online multiplayer. Read Xbox Wire’s campaign preview.

Classic Gears action, with story taking a back seat
In a review published October 1, 2026, VGC’s Chris Scullion praised E-Day’s forceful action and gunplay, while saying the story received less attention than he would have liked. He described the campaign as largely returning to classic Gears action. Scullion also noted that Gears 5’s larger Skiff sections divided players: some welcomed the change of pace, while others found the areas light on content and distracting from the series’ linear combat. Those are one critic’s judgments, not a universal consensus. Read VGC’s E-Day campaign review.
Strong visuals and mobility, but structural reservations
Windows Central’s in-progress campaign review, accessed October 3, 2026, praised E-Day’s visuals, gunplay and increased mobility, but argued that parts of its gameplay structure hold the experience back, including areas that seem open without being truly open. Its 8/10 assessment was for the campaign; the review said multiplayer modes were still to be assessed. Read Windows Central’s review.

Which campaign should you choose?
Choose E-Day if you want the origin story
Pick E-Day if the appeal of seeing Marcus and Dom at the start of the Locust attack outweighs having a campaign built around Kait. The official listing confirms solo play, and critics have praised its action and gunplay. Be aware that VGC felt the story took a back seat to the action, while Windows Central criticized aspects of the structure.
Choose Gears 5 if you want Kait’s campaign
Pick Gears 5 if Kait’s investigation and story are the draw, or if you prefer its campaign to E-Day’s prequel premise. VGC’s comparison describes the larger Skiff sections as a divisive departure from linear combat, not as a feature every player will dislike. Gears 5 also has a clearly documented set of accessibility features on its Xbox product page; that is a difference in what the cited listings specify, not evidence that E-Day lacks accessibility options.
