Choose Gears of War: E-Day if you want the Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago origin story, a campaign for up to four players online, or the newly announced Horde Siege mode. Choose Gears 5 if you want to play Kait Diaz’s campaign, prefer its Horde and Escape options, need three-player campaign co-op, or still play on Xbox One.
E-Day Premium Edition early access began October 1, 2026; its worldwide launch is scheduled for October 6. The comparison below covers officially described features, not a long-term review.

Which game should you play?
Pick E-Day for Marcus and Dom’s origin story
E-Day goes back to the Locust emergence, fourteen years before the original Gears of War, and focuses on Marcus and Dom. It is the more direct fit if their early partnership is the story you want to follow. The official listing frames the game as a third-person cover shooter built on Unreal Engine 5.
Pick Gears 5 for Kait Diaz’s campaign
Gears 5 centers on Kait’s investigation into her connection to the enemy. Choose it when that character arc is the priority, or when you want its listed Horde and Escape PvE modes alongside Versus.

If campaign co-op is decisive, compare the official player counts: E-Day advertises up to four players online, while Gears 5 supports three-player campaign co-op. E-Day also lists split-screen; its product information specifies that two-player split-screen is console-only.
Pick Gears 5 if you use Xbox One
The official Gears 5 listing includes Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. E-Day’s listing names Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC, not Xbox One. E-Day’s launch announcement also names Steam and cloud gaming via Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW; check current service and regional availability before relying on cloud access.

What to know about E-Day’s launch and modes
Early access is not the worldwide launch
As of October 3, 2026, Premium Edition early access was live. Xbox Wire said the worldwide launch would be October 6 at 8:00 a.m. Pacific / 15:00 UTC. Its September 17 update said Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members could join from October 6. Eligibility, subscription catalogs, and regional availability can change, so check the current Xbox listing before buying or subscribing.

Xbox Wire describes Horde Siege as 12 players in three squads, while the product listing calls it an evolution of the series’ wave-survival mode. Gears 5 instead lists Horde and Escape, giving players two named PvE choices. These are different mode lineups, not evidence that one game’s modes are better.

Some legacy features are absent at launch
A September 30 update from Gears of War said the E-Day sandbox was built from scratch and that not every legacy feature could be included at launch. It specifically named Meat Shields, Chainsaw Duels, some legacy weapons, Private Lobbies, and leaderboards as absent at launch. The same update described Season 1 as an eight-week season through December 1 and scheduled Ranked Versus for October 13; those are the publisher’s stated plans, not permanent guarantees. The E-Day listing advertises a 4K / up to 60 FPS target for campaign and multiplayer. Gears 5’s Xbox page lists reduced load times, Instant Resume, variable refresh rate support, and 120 FPS in Versus for its Series X|S version. These are publisher descriptions for different games and contexts, not comparable benchmark results; they do not establish frame-rate consistency or which game runs better in practice.

E-Day’s Premium Edition early access had only just begun at the time of this comparison. Official feature and launch materials do not establish campaign quality, stability, or long-term multiplayer population, so the choice here is based on story, modes, group size, and platform support rather than hands-on verdicts.
