Gears of War: E-Day is not a continuation of Gears 5’s story: it is a prequel about Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago at the beginning of the Locust invasion. The announced differences for returning players include a different campaign co-op size, added traversal options, and a new large-scale PvE mode. Both games retain Versus, but the comparison below covers announced features—not hands-on impressions or independent performance results.
Is E-Day a sequel to Gears 5?
No. E-Day goes back to the start of the conflict, taking place 14 years before the original Gears of War. Xbox describes it as following Marcus and Dom as the Locust Horde first emerges. Gears 5, by contrast, follows Kait Diaz as she investigates her connection to the enemy. Xbox’s E-Day listing and its Gears 5 listing establish those different story settings.
That makes E-Day a return to the series’ earlier characters and chronology, rather than the next chapter of Kait’s story. The available announcements describe the premise; they do not establish how the new story connects to every event in Gears 5.
How do campaign co-op and player counts compare?
The campaign party limits differ. Xbox advertises Gears 5 campaign co-op for three players, online or in split-screen. For E-Day, Xbox lists solo play, two-player split-screen, or up to four players online.

The four-player figure is for E-Day campaign co-op. It is separate from Horde Siege, which Xbox describes as a 12-player PvE mode divided into three squads. The mode’s larger player count does not mean the campaign supports 12 players.
What changes in movement and combat?
E-Day keeps cover-based combat but adds modernized movement and traversal, according to Xbox. In an official Xbox Podcast interview, The Coalition Studio Creative Director Matt Searcy said, “we added a jump button to Gears.” He described the addition as a way to open flanking routes while keeping the series’ heavier feel.

Xbox’s Gears 5 materials emphasize the established cover-shooter formula. The announcements therefore point to more traversal options in E-Day, not a switch away from cover combat. They do not establish which game will feel better to play.
Which PvE and competitive modes are available?
Cooperative PvE
Gears 5 offers Horde and Escape. E-Day introduces Horde Siege, which Xbox Wire describes as a 12-player mode with three squads. That is the announced PvE distinction; it does not establish whether the two games’ modes will have comparable maps, progression systems, or replay value.

For Gears 5, Xbox’s current listing cites 120 FPS in Versus and 4K HDR Ultra visuals on Series X. These are publisher specifications with different scopes, not comparable independent benchmarks or proof that one game performs better overall.
