Gears of War: E-Day supports solo campaign play, two-player split-screen campaign co-op on console, and online campaign co-op for up to four players. Steam players can play without an Xbox account, but they must link one to send a cross-platform squad invite. The official FAQ confirms cross-platform invitations; it does not publish a complete compatibility chart for every platform pairing and mode.
How many players can play Gears of War: E-Day together?
The campaign has three ways to play: solo, two-player split-screen on console, or online co-op for up to four players. Online campaign co-op requires each player to have access to the game and an eligible subscription for online multiplayer.

Does Gears of War: E-Day support crossplay?
The official Gears of War: E-Day Open Beta FAQ confirms that players can send cross-platform squad invites. Its guidance is specifically about invitations; it does not list every supported platform pairing or say that crossplay behavior is identical across campaign, Horde Siege, and Versus. If a particular combination of platforms or modes matters to your group, check current official support information before arranging a session.

Do Steam players need an Xbox account?
No Xbox or Microsoft account is needed just to play on Steam, according to the FAQ. A Steam player does need to link an Xbox account from the in-game social pane to send a cross-platform squad invite. The distinction is between launching and playing on Steam, which does not require the account, and using the cross-platform invite flow, which does.

Which mode should friends choose?
Campaign co-op for the story
Choose the campaign to play through the story together. It supports up to four online players, while local split-screen supports two players on console.
Horde Siege for cooperative PvE
Horde Siege is a separate co-op mode built around squads, missions, classes, and objectives. It is not the campaign, and the official materials do not establish that its full setup or crossplay rules match the campaign’s.

Versus for competitive matches
Versus pits teams against each other in 4v4 matches, so it is the competitive option rather than a cooperative activity.

Xbox says online campaign co-op, Horde Siege, Versus, and other online multiplayer require a Game Pass subscription that includes online multiplayer; the subscription is sold separately. The Xbox FAQ names Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass as day-one access options, but the online-multiplayer requirement is distinct from game access. Check the current plan terms for your platform and region before subscribing, since eligible plans and availability can change.

When and where can you play?
The Xbox Wire launch announcement lists Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and Steam. Xbox’s game page lists Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10/11, while its FAQ also names Microsoft Store and Steam for PC. The worldwide general launch is October 6, 2026, at 8:00 a.m. PT (15:00 UTC); early access began October 1, 2026, at the same time for eligible players, according to Xbox Wire. Availability and access may vary by platform, region, and purchase or subscription.
