If Gboard suddenly stops typing capital letters, first check whether Shift changes the keyboard’s case, then restart your Android device and update Gboard. If the problem continues, clear Gboard’s cache; clear its data only as a later step because that resets the app. Google provides general troubleshooting steps, but has not identified a specific cause for this exact symptom.
Check what is failing
Tap Shift once and see whether the keyboard switches to uppercase. Google documents a single Shift tap for capitalizing the next letter and a double-tap to turn on caps lock. Try typing in another text field or app as well: if capitals work there, the issue may be limited to the original app or field. These checks can help narrow down the problem, but Google does not identify a specific cause for a nonresponsive Shift key.

Restart the device and update Gboard
- Restart your Android phone or tablet.
- Open Google Play, find Gboard, and install an update if one is available.
Google recommends restarting and updating as initial troubleshooting. Updates may include bug fixes, performance improvements, or compatibility improvements. The official guidance does not link this symptom to a particular Gboard release or Android version.

Clear Gboard’s cache, then its data if needed
- Open Android Settings and go to Apps (the exact label can vary by device).
- Select Gboard, then open Storage and cache.
- Tap Clear cache and test typing again.
- If the problem remains, return to the same screen and choose Clear data or Clear storage.
Clearing data resets Gboard to its default state, so its settings will be reset. Android menu names and locations can differ by version and manufacturer. Google’s steps are in Fix problems with Gboard.
If the problem started after an update
If the timing strongly suggests the issue began immediately after a Gboard update, Google describes uninstalling Gboard updates from the app’s information screen. This rolls back updates; it does not establish that a particular release caused the issue. Follow Google’s Android troubleshooting instructions for the available steps.

Force stop or reinstall Gboard
For persistent problems, Google also recommends force-stopping and reopening Gboard or reinstalling it from Google Play. If Gboard is the only keyboard installed, install a secondary keyboard first so you can still enter text while Gboard is unavailable.

If the keyboard responds but automatically changes capitalization or other text, that is different from Shift failing to respond. Google advises turning off Smart compose or Auto-capitalization under Gboard’s Text correction settings when text correction is causing unwanted changes. This setting is not a confirmed fix for a Shift key that does not work.

Report a problem that persists
If none of these steps resolves the issue, Google’s Gboard help material describes submitting feedback or a bug report. Google does not state a response time or guarantee a fix. Individual reports of capitalization problems are not enough to show how widespread the issue is or whether users share the same cause.
