Gboard’s most useful productivity features are tucked behind its toolbar and settings. On Android, you can save reusable text in Clipboard, dictate and edit by voice, translate as you type, and tailor the keyboard to your needs. Availability varies by device, Android and Gboard version, language, and region, so treat the steps below as Android instructions and check the eligibility notes for each feature.
Find Gboard’s settings and put useful tools within reach
On Android, open a text field and tap Gboard’s features menu—the four-square icon near the top of the keyboard. From there, open Settings. Google’s Gboard setup guide describes options including Glide typing, Text correction, and Voice typing. Labels and icon positions can vary by version.
Turn on only the options you expect to use, and check that Gboard is updated if a documented feature is missing. Some Android devices already use Gboard as their default keyboard. You can also enable the Google Search button in Search settings.

Adding a language in Gboard changes the keyboard’s available typing languages; it does not change Android’s system language. In Gboard Settings, open Languages, add a language, and choose a layout. To switch while typing, touch and hold the space bar. Google’s language setup instructions explain the process.

Check the layout before switching, and add languages you actually use. Support is feature-specific: a language available for typing is not necessarily available for voice typing, Translate, or writing tools. Google notes that talk-to-text does not work in every language; consult the relevant feature’s supported-language information before relying on it.
Save reusable text with Clipboard
Gboard’s Android Clipboard can keep copied text handy and, in supported languages and regions, identify useful pieces inside a copied passage. Google says it can extract items such as email addresses, URLs, phone numbers, numerical dates, and times; extraction of addresses, dates, and times is limited by country or region and language. - Copy text you want to reuse, then open Gboard’s features menu and choose Clipboard.
- Tap an item to paste it. If Gboard has identified separate items within copied text, choose the specific piece you need.
- To keep an item, touch and hold it in Clipboard, then tap Pin.
Unpinned clipboard history clears shortly after its last use; pinned items are the exception. A short reply, business detail, or frequently used address may be convenient to pin. Avoid pinning passwords, payment information, or other sensitive text.

Dictate text, add punctuation, and replace words
In most text-entry apps on Android, tap Gboard’s microphone and speak. Google’s voice typing guide lists commands such as “period,” “comma,” “question mark,” “new line,” and “new paragraph.” Punctuation commands do not work in every language. To fix a word, select it and dictate the replacement.
On tablets, the voice toolbar can be moved around the screen and provides controls to pause, return to the keyboard, and switch among enabled languages.
Advanced voice typing and Fix it are Pixel-specific
Google says advanced voice typing is available on Pixel 6 and later, including Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet devices in that family. It adds automatic punctuation, spoken emoji, and editing commands while the microphone remains on. Google states: “The text that you speak stays on your device and isn’t sent to Google servers except when you use the ‘Fix it’ or detailed edits features.” That statement applies to the documented advanced voice typing workflow, not every Gboard voice feature.

Fix it has narrower eligibility: Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, and later; English; United States; and a network connection. Google describes it as correcting errors in typed, pasted, or dictated text. See the current advanced voice typing documentation for device and feature details.

Gboard’s Android Translate tool lets you draft in one language and insert a preview in another. Google’s help page says, “You can translate text into a different language while typing on Gboard.” To use it, open the features menu, choose Translate, select source and target languages, type, review the preview, and select the result to insert it. Language coverage is not universal; Google links to the available translation languages.
Use the preview as a drafting aid, not as a guarantee of accuracy for high-stakes, technical, or sensitive communication.

Use writing tools when your device and language qualify
Gboard’s writing tools include Proofread, Rephrase, Professional, Friendly, Emojify, Elaborate, and Shorten. Google lists these prerequisites: a supported device, Gboard set as the default keyboard, and the latest Gboard version. The supported languages listed in its writing tools help page are English (Australia, Canada, India, UK, and US), Simplified Chinese, French (France and Canada), German (Germany), Italian (Italy), Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Portugal and Brazil), and Spanish (US, Mexico, and Spain).
First-time loading may take a few hours and requires a stable internet connection. Google says input text is not shared with Google or another app, and processing takes place in a secure, isolated environment either on device or in the cloud. That specific statement should not be read as a promise that every Gboard feature processes all content locally.
Search and share without leaving the message
When you need a link while writing, Gboard can search and insert a result into the active message field. Open the features menu, choose Search, enter a query, run it, then tap Share next to a result. Google’s Search and share instructions give nearby restaurants, videos, and weather as examples.

Tune sound, vibration, and appearance
These settings make the keyboard more comfortable, rather than guaranteeing faster typing. Android’s Gboard settings include keypress sound and volume, haptic feedback, and vibration strength under Preferences. Device-level vibration settings can override Gboard’s vibration options. To change the keyboard’s appearance, use the keyboard settings and choose a theme. Google documents both in its theme and preference instructions.
What iPhone and iPad users should expect
The Android workflows above should not be assumed to work the same way in Gboard for iOS. The US App Store listing describes Glide Typing, Google Search, GIFs, emoji search, and stickers for iPhone and iPad, but the available documentation here does not establish whether iOS has the same Clipboard workflow as Android. Check the current app and its settings rather than assuming feature parity.
The US listing also says searches and microphone voice input are sent to Google for those functions, while other typed content is not sent to Google and words are stored on device for spelling and search prediction. These are the listing’s disclosures, not an independent privacy audit. See the US App Store listing for its stated features and privacy information.
