Choose a gaming monitor if you play PS4 at a desk and sit close to the screen; choose a TV if you play from a couch and want a larger display at a distance. For a standard PS4, 1080p is a straightforward fit. A PS4 Pro can make a 4K TV worthwhile for its big-screen experience, but its games are not all native 4K.
Monitor or TV: which fits your PS4 setup?
Start with where you sit, then compare the specific displays you are considering. Monitors are generally designed for close viewing, while TVs are typically used from farther away. Either can work for console gaming; neither category guarantees lower delay or better picture quality.
| Your setup | Starting point | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Desk, close seating, standard PS4 | A 1080p gaming monitor with HDMI | Measured input lag and pixel response at the PS4’s 1080p/60 Hz signal |
| Couch or shared living room | A TV sized for your viewing distance | Game Mode and model-specific 1080p/60 Hz input lag |
| Couch, PS4 Pro, preference for a large 4K screen | A 4K TV | How the TV handles the Pro’s output and the exact game’s resolution |
| You already own a TV | Try it before buying another display | Enable Game Mode and check independent input-lag results |
These are starting points, not guarantees about every model. A fast TV can suit desk play, and a monitor can be used at a distance if its size and viewing experience work for you.

Standard PS4
PlayStation lists 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p among the standard PS4’s supported video standards. That makes a 1080p display a natural match; a monitor or TV with an HDMI input can serve, provided it accepts the console’s output.

PS4 Pro
PlayStation says PS4 Pro game resolution on an HD TV ranges from 1080p to 1440p, and that enhanced upscaling can increase game resolutions to approach 4K. A 4K TV is therefore a reasonable choice if you want a larger-screen setup, but do not assume every Pro game renders natively at 4K. The result varies by game and display.
Refresh-rate labels can also mislead: a monitor advertised at 144 Hz or higher does not make the PS4 render more frames per second. Compare how the exact display performs with the signal the console actually sends rather than buying on the headline refresh rate alone.

Input lag and response time are different
Input lag is the time between a display receiving a signal and showing it. Pixel response time describes how quickly pixels change color and affects motion clarity. A display can have low input lag but slower pixel transitions, or the reverse; evaluating only one number misses part of the experience.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For an older console such as PS4, RTINGS highlights input-lag results at 1080p and 60 Hz as especially relevant. Its TV measurement stops when pixels begin changing color, so its input-lag figure does not include pixel response time. When comparing a monitor and a TV, look for measurements at the same signal format and consider response performance separately.

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
RTINGS describes less than 15 ms as a “good value” for TV input lag at 1080p/60 Hz. Treat this as RTINGS’ testing benchmark, not a universal threshold for what every player will notice: sensitivity differs, and controller and console delays also contribute to the full experience. RTINGS’ input-lag test guidance explains its measurement and benchmark.
Use Game Mode on a TV
Many modern TVs include a Game Mode that reduces picture processing to lower delay. PlayStation’s official gaming-performance guidance says input lag is the top priority for gaming performance and explains that gaming mode can forgo time-consuming signal optimization in favor of performance. Check your TV’s picture settings for Game Mode (the label can vary by model), enable it for play, and compare independent measurements for that exact TV.

Game Mode may change the TV’s picture processing, so the best setting for gaming may not be the one you prefer for movies or other viewing. You can switch modes according to what you are watching. PlayStation’s guidance on gaming performance and TV settings also distinguishes input lag from pixel response time.
Choose for the whole room, not just gaming specs
Desk play and close viewing
A monitor is often the practical choice when you sit close, want a compact display, and play at a desk. For a standard PS4, a 1080p monitor with HDMI is a sensible category to consider. Check independent tests for 1080p/60 Hz input lag and pixel response rather than assuming that “gaming monitor” means low delay.

Couch play and shared use
A TV is often a more natural fit when you sit farther away, want a larger screen, or share the display for other living-room uses. For gaming, enable Game Mode and check the model’s measured performance at the PS4 signal. Picture processing, HDR support, and other television features may matter to your household, but they do not substitute for checking gaming performance.
PS4 Pro and a 4K screen
If you want a large screen from the couch and own a PS4 Pro, a 4K TV is a reasonable option. Keep expectations aligned with PlayStation’s specifications: the Pro can use enhanced upscaling toward 4K, while game resolution varies. The choice is chiefly about whether that screen size and viewing distance suit you, not a promise that every title will be native 4K.
How to compare the displays you are considering
- Confirm the PS4 model. Use the standard PS4’s 1080p support as a practical baseline; consider 4K only in light of the PS4 Pro’s enhanced-upscaling capabilities and variable game resolutions.
- Match the display to your seat. Compare screen size and viewing distance for your desk or couch rather than choosing by category name alone.
- Check the connection. Make sure the display has an HDMI input that accepts the PS4’s output.
- Find comparable testing. Look for independent input-lag results at 1080p/60 Hz, especially for a TV in Game Mode, and review pixel response separately.
- Consider the rest of the picture. Weigh motion clarity, picture processing, HDR, and non-gaming uses according to your needs; a refresh-rate label by itself does not establish PS4 performance.
This comparison is category-level guidance, not a ranking of particular current products. No specific model, price, or regional availability is established here, so choose between the exact displays available to you using the criteria above.
