Neither type is automatically better. For long sessions, choose the specific chair that fits your body, supports your lower back, and adjusts to your desk and preferred sitting positions. A gaming or office label alone cannot tell you whether those adjustments will fit.
What matters more than the chair category?
Fit and adjustability matter more than whether a chair is marketed for gaming or office work. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) says a well-designed and appropriately adjusted chair supports the back, legs, buttocks, and arms while helping reduce awkward posture and contact stress. Its chair guidance treats the chair as part of the workstation, to be adjusted alongside the monitor, keyboard, and desk.
Neither OSHA nor the NIH guidance reviewed here establishes a universal winner between gaming and office chairs. The useful comparison is between the actual models: can you adjust them to sit comfortably, reach your equipment, and change positions without losing support?

Fit the seat to your body
The seat should be wide and deep enough to support you while allowing your back to reach the backrest. Avoid pressure behind the knees. Check whether seat height and effective seat depth can be adjusted to suit both your body and desk; a chair that fits one person may not fit another.

OSHA’s Purchasing Guide lists example criteria: adjustable seat height of 15–22 inches, a 15–17-inch seat pan, a rounded waterfall seat edge, and adjustable seat depth. These are selection criteria from the guide, not guarantees of fit. OSHA cautions that its criteria may not accommodate every body type and recommends trying a chair for comfort and fit over an extended period before buying.
Check lumbar support and the backrest
The lumbar support should meet your lower back where you need it, rather than being fixed in a position that does not match your body. Look for a backrest that supports more than one seated posture and reclines with resistance you can use comfortably. OSHA’s purchasing guide gives a backrest able to recline at least 15 degrees as an example criterion; its chair guidance also recommends height-adjustable lumbar support.

Set armrests without raising your shoulders
Armrests should support your lower arms while your shoulders remain relaxed and your arms stay close to your body. Check that their height and width are adjustable enough for your build and that they do not prevent you from moving close to the desk. NIH guidance also emphasizes keeping the arms supported without awkward positioning.

Consider materials and desk compatibility
OSHA’s purchasing checklist recommends firm, breathable, resilient materials. Comfort depends on the particular chair and your preferences, so do not assume that mesh, fabric, or other upholstery is categorically better. Also check whether the chair can be positioned so your feet, back, keyboard, mouse, and monitor are supported and reachable without awkward reaching or neck movement.

Set up the chair and workstation
- Set the seat height: Adjust it so your feet rest flat on the floor or a footrest, and your body can align comfortably with the desk and input devices.
- Adjust the backrest and lumbar support: Position them to meet your lower back and provide support as you sit in different positions.
- Position the armrests: Set them to support your forearms without lifting your shoulders or pushing you away from the desk.
- Arrange your equipment: Place the monitor and frequently used controls to limit reaching and unnecessary neck movement.
- Change position: Vary your posture and break up long, uninterrupted periods at the computer where possible.
OSHA notes that a rolled towel or removable back-support cushion can help temporarily if your chair lacks lumbar support. NIH also describes using a properly placed lumbar cushion. If your feet cannot rest flat, CDC/NIOSH suggests a box or book as a footrest. These are targeted aids, not a substitute for a chair that fits.
Why breaks and posture changes still matter
A supportive chair cannot remove the effects of staying in one position too long. CDC/NIOSH’s work-from-home guidance recommends changing posture, while OSHA’s additional computer-workstation information addresses taking breaks. Build opportunities to move and change position into long computer sessions rather than expecting the chair to do all the work.

Which one should you choose?
Choose the gaming chair if that particular model fits you and offers the seat, backrest, lumbar, recline, and armrest adjustments you need at your desk. Choose the office chair if it does those things better for your body and setup. Compare dimensions and adjustment ranges, and try the chair for an extended period when possible; the category name is not evidence that a chair will fit.
