If you want fighting games that scratch the same itch as Mortal Kombat, start with three titles whose publishers describe them in enough detail to compare directly: Tekken 8 for a major 3D fighter, Soulcalibur VI for weapon-based combat, and Guilty Gear -Strive- for stylized 2.5D action. None of them reproduces Mortal Kombat’s controls or pacing exactly, so the useful question is which feature you are chasing. This guide sorts the options by that feature and uses Mortal Kombat 1 as the reference point.
What players usually mean by “similar”
A typical request in fighting-game communities is for games that match a specific feel. One Reddit thread asking “What fighting games are similar to Mortal Kombat?” specifies timing, pacing and/or combos as the qualities that matter (the original post). That is one player’s wording rather than a survey, but it is a useful checklist. Before choosing a game, decide which of these you care about most:

- Presentation: whether the fighters are fully 3D or drawn in a 2.5D style.
- Fighting style: unarmed combat, weapon combat, or a mix.
- Pace and spectacle: how fast fights move and how flashy finishing moves are.
- Story content: whether single-player modes give each character a narrative.
- Assists: whether a helper character can be called in during a match.
The Mortal Kombat 1 baseline
Mortal Kombat 1’s official PlayStation description highlights four features that make a useful comparison set: Fatal Blows, defensive Breakers, Fatalities, and the Kameo Fighter assist system (PlayStation’s Mortal Kombat 1 page). When you read the entries below, check whether each game offers something comparable to these features. Few do all four, and the three picks here cover different parts of the list.

Tekken 8: a major 3D fighter
Tekken 8 is a current entry in the Tekken franchise from Bandai Namco. It is the most natural recommendation for someone who is open to a different major fighting series with a 3D presentation. The publisher’s page lists updates dated August 2026 (Bandai Namco’s Tekken 8 page). The page does not describe detailed mechanics, so this guide does not claim that Tekken 8 handles timing, combos, or assists the way Mortal Kombat 1 does. Check the game’s own tutorial and training mode before deciding whether its pace suits you.
#1 Best Overall
- Arcade Quest - In the new single-player mode ‘Arcade Quest’, players can create their own avatar and conquer their rivals in a variety of different arcades. This mode serves as an introduction to the gameplay of TEKKEN 8, allowing players to acquire basic knowledge, learn practical techniques, and enjoy a unique storyline and battles different from regular matches. .
Soulcalibur VI: weapon-based combat
Soulcalibur VI is the clearest pick for players who want weapons instead of unarmed fighting. Bandai Namco describes a roster of warriors, each with a weapon and a distinct fighting style, in high-speed battles (Bandai Namco’s Soulcalibur VI page). If the Mortal Kombat appeal for you is variety in how each character moves, this is the strongest fit among the three. Bandai Namco Studios’ series page states that the Soulcalibur series “has sold over 15 million units” (Bandai Namco Studios’ Soulcalibur series page). That page does not say when the figure was measured, so treat it as a series-wide milestone rather than a current total.
Guilty Gear -Strive-: stylized 2.5D action
Guilty Gear -Strive- is the stylistic outlier of the three. Arc System Works calls it the latest entry in a franchise that began in 1998, and it is a 2.5D fighter rather than a 3D one (Arc System Works’ Guilty Gear -Strive- site). It is the pick for players who want a distinctive look and a story-focused single-player experience. The publisher notes CPU fighting with a unique story for each character, which is more narrative content than the other two picks are described as having. Expect a visual style and rhythm that feel different from Mortal Kombat’s, even though both are 2D-style or 2.5D-style action in some sense.

Side-by-side comparison
The table below uses only what each publisher states. “Not stated” means the publisher’s page for that game does not describe the feature, not that the feature is absent.

How to choose
- Pick Tekken 8 if you want a major 3D fighting series and are willing to learn its systems from scratch.
- Pick Soulcalibur VI if weapon variety and fast weapon-based duels matter more to you than unarmed combat.
- Pick Guilty Gear -Strive- if you want a stylized 2.5D look and character stories you can play through.
- Stay with Mortal Kombat 1 if the Kameo assists and Fatalities are the parts you value most.
What this list does not cover
This guide is deliberately short. It covers the games whose official descriptions are detailed enough to compare with confidence. It does not rank a full list of twenty titles, and it does not confirm current platform availability, editions, or prices for any game. Those details change, so check the publisher pages linked above before buying. Expanding the list would require the same kind of verification for each additional game, and until that is done, a longer list would only guess at how each game plays.
