If you want another historical Japanese adventure after Ghost of Yōtei, choose based on what you want more of: Rise of the Ronin is the closest open-world samurai match; Assassin’s Creed Shadows puts more weight on stealth and offers two contrasting protagonists; and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is the pick for demanding, focused sword combat. For the closest connection to Yōtei’s design lineage, play Ghost of Tsushima.

Which game should you play after Ghost of Yōtei?

There is no single substitute that reproduces every part of Ghost of Yōtei. These games overlap in setting, exploration, stealth, or swordplay, but their structures and emphases differ. Use this quick comparison to narrow the choice.

Game Best fit What differs
Rise of the Ronin Open-world historical Japan, samurai role, player choices Late-19th-century setting; PS5 exclusive; story missions support online co-op for up to three players.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows Japanese setting, stealth, and distinct playstyles Switches between shinobi Naoe and samurai Yasuke; available on multiple platforms listed by Ubisoft.
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice High-pressure sword combat, stealth, and boss fights More combat- and boss-focused than an open-world exploration adventure.
Ghost of Tsushima The closest connection to the series and its design lineage A separate story set centuries earlier; it is the natural choice if you have not played the predecessor.

For an open-world samurai adventure: Rise of the Ronin

Rise of the Ronin is the most direct structural match among these recommendations: PlayStation describes it as an open-world action-adventure set in late-19th-century Japan. You play amid a period of political change, with decisions that can affect the story. That makes it a good fit if you want room to explore and a historical setting while taking on the role of a samurai.

It also has practical differences worth weighing. PlayStation lists it as a PS5 exclusive. Story missions can be played online with up to three players, and online play requires PlayStation Plus. Easy, normal, and hard difficulty settings are available and can be changed at any time. These options make it the clearest choice here for someone who wants an open world but also values co-op or adjustable challenge. PlayStation’s Rise of the Ronin page

Fate Samurai Remnant
  • COOPERATION WITH SERVANTS IS THE KEY TO COMBAT
  • In Fate/Samurai Remnant, players control Miyamoto Iori, a master who studied the Niten Ichiryu style of swordsmanship. He fights alongside Saber, a servant who possesses strength beyond that of humans! When facing enemies beyond human control, players will be able to instruct their servant to attack with powerful magical techniques, or even take direct control of the servant to attack the enemy swarm. Dynamic battle scenes between servants help elevate the action to new heights and are must-see contests for fans of the series.
  • EXPLORE THE CITY OF EDO WITH SERVANTS
  • Throughout the game, players get the chance to explore the town of Edo, where row houses, samurai residences, and brothels stand side by side. Here, many people frequent the streets, and characters drawn with a distinct Japanese touch are brought to life. While following the story of the “Waxing Moon Ritual”, players will be able to interact with various characters and animals in town, explore a variety of areas, and take on a wide array of challenges as they fight for survival in the latest Holy Grail War!

For stealth and two playstyles: Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Assassin’s Creed Shadows takes place in late-Sengoku Japan and gives you two protagonists with complementary approaches. Naoe is a shinobi, suited to stealth; Yasuke is a samurai, bringing a more direct style of play. Choose it if moving between stealth and open confrontation appeals more than having one consistent samurai lead.

Ubisoft lists the game for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Amazon Luna, Macs with Apple silicon through the Mac App Store, and Windows PC through Ubisoft Connect, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. Availability can vary by region and change, so check the relevant local store before buying. • 4 FEARLESS SAMURAI: Choose from four fearsome Samurai, each with their own strengths, weaknesses, and motivations.
  • THOUSANDS OF COMBINATIONS: Create your fighting style with a vast array of Ability Cards, offering endless deck possibilities.

For the toughest sword fights: Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Pick Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice if precise, demanding combat matters more to you than roaming a large open world. Its official description follows the One-Armed Wolf in late-1500s Sengoku Japan and highlights stealth, vertical traversal, prosthetic tools, ninja abilities, and direct combat. GameSpot’s comparison characterizes it as more challenging and boss-focused than Ghost of Tsushima, so expect a different balance: the central attraction is overcoming difficult encounters, not matching Yōtei’s world structure. For the closest series connection: Ghost of Tsushima

If you have not played Ghost of Tsushima, it is the most direct way to experience the design lineage behind Ghost of Yōtei. PlayStation describes Yōtei as evolving the design and mythos of its 2020 hit, while making clear that it is not a direct narrative sequel. Yōtei takes place several hundred years later, and Jin Sakai does not appear in it. Play Tsushima for the earlier game’s own story and context, not because you need it to understand Yōtei. Gurei - PlayStation 5
  • You are free to pick your fights against the Kami in any order. The game features a dynamic difficulty system where each enemy strength is defined by the player’s chosen path. This means that the very same Kami fought at the very beginning could also be the final boss in a different route. Hope to never leave the one you struggle most to fight last!
  • Besides sword attacks, dodges, head stomps and other basic abilities, Rei will learn a completely new skill for each defeated Kami. Those will provide further depth to your combat arsenal, be it a stronger dash, a weapon that can execute enemies, the ability to heal and many more!
  • Player choice is the ultimate power. Taking into account the vastly distinct enemies’ patterns and unique skills granted upon each victory, you will be able to decide how to approach every challenge. It won’t be easy either way, but you can always go back and try something different.
  • Gurei is a game about fighting strong enemies, but that’s not all. The Kami inhabit a surreal castle located between the human and spirit worlds. After each victory, Rei comes closer to the realm of spirits, starting to encounter peculiar characters from Japanese mythology. These creatures will add novelty and strangeness to your journey, providing commentary, unique animations, side objectives and obscure secrets.
  • You will get to know the different Kami quite well. When Rei defeats them, she absorbs their power and their personality. The defeated Kami will be carried around wherever Rei goes, and they’ll surely have stuff to talk about. Sometimes their remarks will be useful information that builds the player’s understanding of the lore and the game mechanics, but sometimes they will be... not so helpful, to put it briefly. Good luck!

Match your next game to what you want more of

  • Exploring a historical open world: Start with Rise of the Ronin.
  • Stealth and a choice between contrasting protagonists: Choose Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
  • Hard, focused sword combat and bosses: Choose Sekiro.
  • The closest design and series context: Play Ghost of Tsushima.
  • Online co-op for story missions: Rise of the Ronin is the option in this group with up to three-player online co-op.
  • Platform flexibility: Ubisoft lists the broadest platform range for Assassin’s Creed Shadows; confirm availability in your region.

Specific preferences can make the choice clearer than a general request for a “similar” game. For example, a player who wants a substantial tutorial, little handholding, a large world, and upgrades that do not feel forced may be looking primarily for self-directed exploration and progression. That is one player’s stated preference, not a measure of what most players want. Example player discussion
