If you want cryptic puzzles that demand careful move planning, start with Void Stranger. If you want secrets and clues folded into an action adventure, try TUNIC. End of Abyss is the darker exploration pick: current launch coverage describes it as horror action, not as a Sokoban-style puzzle game. These games meet different parts of the brief, so the right choice depends on whether you want puzzles, discovery, or atmosphere to lead.

How these three games differ

Game What leads How you uncover things Combat and atmosphere
Void Stranger Room-scale, turn-by-turn spatial puzzles Plan moves around traps and obstacles; the story emerges gradually Puzzles are central; its description mentions fiendish foes
TUNIC Exploration and action Find manual pages that reveal maps, tips, techniques, and secrets Combat is part of exploring a connected world
End of Abyss Sci-fi horror action and exploration Scan the environment and investigate points of interest Survival-horror framing, twin-stick controls, and exploration

This is a comparison of the games’ described structures, not a measured ranking of puzzle difficulty. Steam describes Void Stranger as a 2D Sokoban-style game where every step counts. TUNIC’s Steam listing emphasizes exploration, combat, and reconstructing an instruction manual. For End of Abyss, Xbox Wire calls it a sci-fi action adventure, while GamesRadar’s launch-window review describes it as survival horror.

Void Stranger: for cryptic, deliberate spatial puzzles

Void Stranger is the closest fit if “cryptic puzzles” means small spaces where each move matters. System Erasure’s single-player game asks you to reason through Sokoban-style rooms, with traps and fiendish foes complicating the route. Its official description also says the story seeps through the Void, making the larger mystery part of the appeal rather than a substitute for the room-by-room logic.

TUNIC: for secrets hidden in a world and its manual

TUNIC is a better match if you want to discover how a game works while traveling through it. Its isometric world mixes exploration, combat, hidden treasures, and secret puzzles. Found pages gradually rebuild an instruction manual, offering maps, tips, techniques, and secrets without turning the experience into a set of isolated Sokoban rooms.

That makes it a bridge between puzzle-minded curiosity and an action adventure: clues reward close attention, but fighting and exploring are part of the structure. The game, by TUNIC Team and published by Finji, was released March 16, 2022, according to Steam. For PC play, Steam recommends a gamepad or controller; it does not require a particular brand or model.

End of Abyss: for horror atmosphere and exploratory action

End of Abyss belongs on this list for its dark setting and investigative exploration, not because available descriptions establish it as a pure puzzle game. A January 2026 GamesRadar interview describes twin-stick controls, a mainly top-down view that sometimes shifts toward isometric, and a scanner that can mark points of interest or reveal information about the environment and creatures.

Section 9 Interactive co-founder Marcus Ottvall described the intended progression as relatively simple combat alongside a Metroidvania aspect: finding weapons and equipment, powering up, and unlocking interconnected areas. That points to exploration and action as the main loop, with environmental scanning as a tool for investigation—not evidence that the game is built around the constrained move planning of Void Stranger.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose Void Stranger for turn-by-turn spatial logic, tricky rooms, and a story that emerges gradually.
  • Choose TUNIC for hidden clues, an incomplete manual, and secrets discovered through exploration alongside combat.
  • Choose End of Abyss for sci-fi horror, scanning, and exploratory action; do not expect its descriptions to promise a Void Stranger-style puzzle structure.
