If a game in Windows 11 seems to lose focus, first check whether a notification banner is merely covering the game or whether the game has actually stopped receiving keyboard input. For a banner, adjust notification settings. For genuine focus loss—such as the game minimizing or another window taking over—close background apps and overlays one at a time and retest. There is no single confirmed fix for every case.

Tell a notification interruption from actual focus loss

A banner appearing over a game can look like an interruption without changing which window receives keyboard input. Actual focus loss means Windows has directed input elsewhere: the game may stop responding to the keyboard, minimize, or be displaced by another window. Microsoft explains that “Only one window at a time can receive keyboard input. The window that receives input is said to have the keyboard focus.” (Microsoft Learn: About keyboard input.)

  • Note whether the game visibly minimizes or another window flashes into view.
  • Check whether the taskbar appears, or whether only a notification banner is shown.
  • At the moment it happens, test whether keyboard input still goes to the game.

These observations help choose the right branch below; a report that a game “randomly loses focus” does not by itself identify what caused it.

If notifications are covering the game

Windows Focus temporarily blocks notifications, sounds, and alerts. Do Not Disturb can also be set to turn on automatically while you are playing a game or using a full-screen app. These controls quiet notifications; they do not identify or prevent a separate app from taking foreground focus.

  1. Open Settings > System > Notifications.
  2. Review Do Not Disturb and its automatic rules. Enable the rule for gaming or full-screen use if it fits your needs.
  3. Review notifications for individual apps and the allowed priority notifications, then adjust them to suit how you play.

Microsoft’s notifications and Do Not Disturb guidance describes these controls. Labels and available options can vary by Windows build.

If the game really loses keyboard focus

Look for software that may be activating a window or displaying an overlay. Test likely apps individually rather than switching off many unrelated settings at once: close one app, reproduce the problem, then record whether the symptom changes before trying the next. Recently installed or updated apps are reasonable candidates to check, but their timing alone does not prove they are responsible.

Check overlays one at a time

Windows documents Win+G as the shortcut to open Game Bar while a game is open. Include Game Bar and any other overlays you use in your one-at-a-time test. If closing an overlay changes the behavior, repeat the test before treating that as confirmation; an overlay is a possibility, not an established cause for every affected PC.

Check background apps without assuming one Windows switch controls everything

Windows offers background-permission controls for supported apps, but Microsoft notes that desktop apps manage their own background behavior through their own settings. Review the controls available for the specific app you are testing. Turning off a Windows background permission does not necessarily disable a desktop launcher, overlay, or utility.

If ordinary app-by-app checks do not identify it

A clean boot can help test whether background software is involved by starting Windows with a reduced set of startup programs and services. It is community troubleshooting advice, not a guaranteed fix or proof of which program caused the problem. A Microsoft Q&A discussion about an Explorer-related symptom suggests this approach alongside checking background apps and overlays. If you try a clean boot, follow Microsoft’s own instructions and note the changes so you can restore normal startup afterward.

Community replies to a separate September 8, 2025 Microsoft Q&A thread about full-screen games losing focus also mention a registry value named ForegroundLockTimeout. One independent advisor suggests checking whether the current user’s value is zero and restoring it to 200000. This is not an official Microsoft fix, and the thread does not establish that the value caused the reported problem. Treat it as an advanced lead only after simpler isolation checks; back up the registry and understand the change before editing it. See the Q&A thread and its replies.

If it happens only in one windowed or borderless game

Windows has per-app graphics options for windowed-game optimizations. Microsoft documents these as graphics and presentation settings, not as a fix for foreground focus loss. If you investigate this branch, change one relevant setting at a time and restart the game as directed, then check whether the original symptom changes. The setting’s presence does not establish that graphics presentation caused the focus change. See Microsoft’s optimizations for windowed games guidance.

Keep a short record while testing

When the problem is intermittent, a simple log can make comparisons more useful. Note the game and display mode, what appeared or activated, whether the game minimized, whether keyboard input stopped, and which app or overlay you had closed immediately before the test. Change one thing at a time so that any improvement points to a useful lead rather than an unclear combination of changes.
