Choose based on the phones you use: SmartTag3 is the better on-paper fit for a household that mixes supported Galaxy and iOS devices, while AirTag is the simpler choice for an Apple-centered household. Both can help locate nearby belongings and rely on participating devices to report an item when it is out of your phone’s range; neither is a guaranteed live GPS tracker. Samsung’s U.S. SmartTag3 release is expected by early November 2026, so it is not yet available there as of October 3, 2026.

Which tracker fits your phones?
Choose SmartTag3 for a mixed Galaxy and iPhone household
Samsung lists SmartTag3 compatibility with Galaxy devices on Android 12 or later and iOS devices on iOS 17 or later, using the SmartThings app. That makes it the more flexible option on paper when people who may need to set up or find a tag use both ecosystems. However, Samsung says Compass View—the directional finding feature—requires a supported Galaxy device. Check whether the specific phone you plan to use supports the features you need before buying. Samsung specifications
Choose AirTag for an Apple-centered household
AirTag setup requires an Apple Account and a supported iPhone or iPad. If the people who will manage or locate the tag use Apple devices, it is the direct fit for Apple’s Find My system. Apple does not list Android as a supported setup platform for AirTag. Apple announcement
What happens when an item is out of range?
Neither tracker has standalone GPS. Bluetooth helps your phone find a nearby tag; when the tag is farther away, its location can be reported if participating devices detect it and relay information through the maker’s network. That is network-assisted locating, not a promise of continuous or real-time tracking.
#1 Best Overall
- Find your things with ease: The SmartThings Find app uses Bluetooth and ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to locate and keep track of your stuff
- Water and Dust Resistant: IP67 rating offers protection against dust and water immersion between 15 cm and 1 meter for up to 30 minutes
- Compatible with Galaxy Devices Only
- SmartTag3: Samsung says Galaxy Find Network can report a tag’s location through nearby Galaxy devices. The displayed location may differ from the tag’s actual location, and update timing depends on nearby devices, settings, network, and regional conditions. Samsung specifications
- AirTag: Apple says nearby Apple devices detect its Bluetooth signal and report the accessory’s approximate location to the owner. Whether and when a location appears depends on a participating device encountering the tag. Apple announcement
The manufacturers’ range figures describe different technologies and are not a controlled head-to-head test. Samsung’s stated distances are specified limits, not assured performance in a home, airport, or crowded street. Apple’s 50% Precision Finding improvement is measured against the previous AirTag generation—not against SmartTag3.
How do nearby finding features compare?
Samsung publishes three nominal SmartTag3 distances: Bluetooth LE up to 120 m, Bluetooth 6 Channel Sounding up to 60 m, and UWB up to 20 m. Samsung qualifies the 60 m Channel Sounding range as line-of-sight and notes that walls, nearby electronics, and other obstacles may shorten it. Compass View combines distance and direction, but it is available only on supported Galaxy devices. Samsung specifications

What the published claims cannot tell you
The available manufacturer information gives compatibility, stated specifications, launch timing, and prices; it does not provide independent head-to-head testing of location accuracy, update speed, battery life, or recovery rates. It also does not establish which tracker has the larger or more effective real-world finding network. Choose according to your devices and use case rather than treating a maker’s range or network description as proof of superior performance.
