Neither phone is automatically the better value: compare current prices in your market at the same storage capacity. The Galaxy S25 launched for less, but its base model had 128GB; the Galaxy S26 starts at 256GB. At launch, the 256GB S25 was $40.01 cheaper than the 256GB S26 in the U.S. Choose the S25 if it is still meaningfully cheaper and 128GB is enough; consider the S26 if its current premium is worthwhile to you for its larger screen, higher rated battery capacity, or newer generation.
What changed between the Galaxy S26 and S25?
Samsung announced the Galaxy S26 series on February 25, 2026, and said it would be available to buy from March 11, 2026. The specifications below are Samsung’s listed figures for the base models, not independent measurements. Samsung’s comparison guide provides the model details and launch context.
| Specification | Galaxy S26 | Galaxy S25 | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Display | 6.3-inch FHD+, 120Hz | 6.2-inch FHD+, 120Hz | The S26 is slightly larger; the S25 is marginally more compact. |
| Weight | 167g | 162g | The S25 is 5g lighter. |
| Typical battery capacity | 4,300mAh | 4,000mAh | The S26 has a higher listed typical capacity, but this does not establish longer real-world battery life. |
| Rear cameras | 50MP wide, 12MP ultrawide, 10MP telephoto; 3x optical zoom | 50MP wide, 12MP ultrawide, 10MP telephoto; 3x optical zoom | Samsung lists the same rear-camera arrangement for both. |
| Starting storage | 256GB | 128GB | The S26 starts with twice the storage. |
Battery capacity is a manufacturer specification, not a runtime test. Samsung also cautions that availability and update timing may vary by device model; the cited information does not establish a precise number of software-support years for either phone. | Configuration | Reported U.S. launch price | Price difference |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy S25, 128GB | $799 | $100 less than the 256GB S26, but with half the storage |
| Galaxy S25, 256GB | $859.99 | $40.01 less than the 256GB S26 |
| Galaxy S26, 256GB | $899 | — |
Those figures show why storage matters in a value comparison: the entry-price difference compares unlike capacities. Even the $40.01 gap between the two 256GB launch configurations is only a historical reference. Discounts, carrier offers, stock, and available configurations can change by location and date.
Which phone should you buy?
Choose the Galaxy S25 if price and compact size matter most
- Pick it when its current local price is meaningfully lower than the S26’s and 128GB meets your needs.
- Consider the 256GB S25 if you want to compare like-for-like storage and it remains cheaper where you live.
- Its 6.2-inch display and 162g weight make it the slightly smaller, lighter option.
Choose the Galaxy S26 if its premium fits your budget
- It starts at 256GB, which may be a better fit if you expect to keep more apps, photos, or videos on the phone.
- Its listed display is 0.1 inch larger, and its typical battery capacity is 300mAh higher than the S25’s.
- Choose it if you want the newer generation and the current price difference is acceptable to you.
Do not pay extra for an assumed rear-camera hardware upgrade
Samsung lists the same rear-camera hardware arrangement for both base models: a 50MP wide camera, a 12MP ultrawide, and a 10MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. Those specifications alone do not establish a major camera-hardware advantage for the S26.

How to make a fair comparison where you live
- Check current prices and stock for both phones in your country, including any carrier or trade-in offer you would actually use.
- Match storage capacity first. Compare 256GB with 256GB; compare the 128GB S25 with the S26 only if the difference in storage suits you.
- Calculate the price gap from the offers available to you today, not from historical U.S. launch prices.
- Decide whether the S26’s larger screen, higher listed battery capacity, and newer generation are worth that gap to you.
