Very high GPU temperatures in FurMark do not automatically mean your graphics card is defective. FurMark is deliberately designed to draw unusually high power—potentially more than ordinary games—so it can trigger protective clock reductions. Judge the result using your exact GPU model’s specifications, the sensor being reported (core/edge or hotspot/junction), and whether the card remains stable after basic cooling checks.

Why FurMark runs hotter than games

NVIDIA describes FurMark as an application that stresses a GPU by “maximizing power draw well beyond any real world application or game.” That makes it a worst-case synthetic workload rather than a prediction of normal gaming temperature. NVIDIA also explains that graphics cards can slow their clocks when over-temperature or over-current conditions are detected; these protections are intended to keep the card operating safely.

A temperature spike or a falling clock in FurMark is therefore a protection response, not proof of permanent damage. Do not disable thermal, power or current protections. NVIDIA warns that doing so can permanently damage the card and void its warranty (NVIDIA Support, updated September 29, 2021).

Identify which temperature you are reading

“GPU temperature” is not one universal measurement. Monitoring software may show an edge or core temperature and, on some cards, a hotspot or junction temperature taken from sensors distributed across the die. These readings can differ substantially and must not be judged against the same limit.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Reading What it represents How to interpret it
Core/edge A general GPU die or edge reading reported by the card Compare it with the exact model’s published maximum or operating guidance.
Hotspot/junction The hottest measured point among distributed die sensors Use a specification that explicitly applies to junction or hotspot; do not substitute an edge-temperature limit.
Clock and power behavior Whether the GPU reduces frequency or power as temperature rises A controlled reduction can indicate protective management; instability, artifacts or shutdowns require stopping the test.

AMD’s statement that up to 110°C junction temperature can be expected during typical gaming applies specifically to the Radeon RX 5700 series and was published in 2020. It is not a universal limit for every Radeon, NVIDIA card or sensor (AMD Community update).

There is no universal “safe FurMark temperature”

Maximum temperatures vary by model, cooler design, firmware and sensor. NVIDIA’s specification tables list a maximum GPU temperature separately for individual products; the RTX 30 Series page is an example (NVIDIA GeForce specifications). Find the specification for your exact card rather than applying a number copied from another model.

Also compare like with like. A 90°C hotspot on one model cannot be directly compared with a 90°C core reading on another, and a FurMark result cannot be treated as the same as a game result. Record the temperature curve over time, the sensor names, fan speed, power and clock behavior, and the workload used.

When to stop the test

  • Stop immediately if the computer becomes unstable, displays artifacts, shuts down, reaches the model’s published protection or maximum limit, or the behavior makes you uncomfortable.
  • Never bypass the card’s thermal or over-current controls to obtain a higher benchmark score.
  • A clock reduction by itself can be normal protection under FurMark; persistent overheating accompanied by artifacts, crashes or shutdowns is a reason to stop troubleshooting and seek model-specific help.

A safe troubleshooting sequence

  1. Record the hardware and sensors. Write down the full GPU model and the monitoring application’s labels. Capture maximum core/edge and hotspot/junction values separately, plus fan speed, clocks and whether throttling occurs.
  2. Verify fan operation. During the run, confirm that the GPU fans actually start and respond to rising temperature. A fan that never spins, grinds or stops unexpectedly points to a cooling fault rather than a normal FurMark result.
  3. Inspect airflow and accessible dust. Check that case intakes and exhausts are unobstructed and remove accessible heatsink dust using appropriate PC-cleaning practices. A FurMark troubleshooting guide suggests these checks, but it cannot establish the cause for your particular card (FurMark guide).
  4. Compare with the manufacturer’s guidance. Use the exact product specification and the correct sensor type. Do not transfer AMD’s RX 5700-series junction statement to another GPU, or an NVIDIA edge-temperature value to a hotspot reading.
  5. Test a normal workload separately. If FurMark is hot but games remain stable and within the card’s guidance, the difference may reflect FurMark’s unusually heavy power demand. If ordinary workloads also overheat or show artifacts, document those symptoms.
  6. Escalate unresolved faults. Persistent overheating, abnormal fan behavior, artifacts or shutdowns after basic checks warrant the manufacturer’s support process or a qualified repair technician. The available facts do not justify telling an unknown owner to repaste a cooler, replace thermal pads or buy a new card without model-specific diagnosis.

How to interpret a large core-to-hotspot delta

A large difference between core/edge and hotspot/junction readings is meaningful only when both sensors are identified and measured on the same card during the same run. Track whether the gap grows steadily, whether clocks fall, and whether symptoms occur. The delta alone is not a universal failure threshold; compare it with the card maker’s documentation and the card’s behavior in normal applications.

What your current information can—and cannot—prove

Without the GPU model, sensor labels, measured values, fan behavior and symptoms, nobody can give a reliable individual diagnosis or a universal pass/fail number. FurMark’s design explains why its temperatures can be exceptionally high, while the exact specification and observed behavior determine whether your card is operating as intended.
