Apple’s AirPods family runs from the original AirPods, announced in 2016, to AirPods 5, announced in 2026. It is not one straight generation count: standard AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max are separate product lines, each with its own numbering. The list below follows announcement chronology through September 30, 2026, and distinguishes new generations from case or connector revisions.
What order did AirPods come out?
Here is the announcement chronology. The dates are Apple announcement dates where verified, not necessarily the date products reached stores in every region. Entries with only a year have year-level chronology in Apple’s archive; an exact day is not stated here.
- AirPods (1st generation) — September 7, 2016. Apple introduced the wireless earbuds with its W1 chip, automatic setup, and sensors that detect when they are being worn. Apple claimed up to five hours of listening on one charge. Apple’s 2016 announcement.
- AirPods (2nd generation) — March 20, 2019. The update brought the H1 chip and hands-free “Hey Siri.” Apple said it offered up to 50 percent more talk time than the first generation. Buyers could choose a standard charging case or an optional Wireless Charging Case. Apple’s 2019 announcement.
- AirPods Pro (1st generation) — 2019. This began the in-ear Pro branch, separate from the numbered open-ear AirPods line. Apple’s archive records the announcement in October 2019; an exact day is not stated here. Apple Newsroom archive.
- AirPods Max (1st generation) — December 8, 2020. Apple introduced a separate over-ear branch. Apple’s announcement.
- AirPods (3rd generation) — 2021. This is the third entry in the standard AirPods sequence, between AirPods 2 and AirPods 4. The exact announcement day is not stated here. Apple Newsroom archive.
- AirPods Pro (2nd generation) — September 7, 2022. Apple highlighted the H2 chip, improved Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and Transparency mode, spatial audio, stem touch control, longer battery life, and a new charging case. Apple’s announcement.
- AirPods 4 — September 9, 2024. Apple announced two configurations: AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with ANC. The same announcement introduced USB-C charging for AirPods Max and hearing-health features for AirPods Pro 2. Apple’s announcement.
- AirPods Pro 3 — September 9, 2025. Availability began September 19, 2025. Apple highlighted a revised in-ear design, heart-rate sensing and workout tracking, Live Translation, and longer battery life. Apple said ANC was up to 2x more effective than on AirPods Pro 2; that is Apple’s product comparison, not independent testing. Apple’s announcement.
- AirPods Max 2 — March 16, 2026. Apple described the H2-powered over-ear model as adding improved ANC, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, and Live Translation. These are manufacturer-stated capabilities. Apple’s announcement.
- AirPods 5 — September 9, 2026. Apple announced AirPods 5 and AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case; store availability began September 18. The U.S. announcement prices were $129 and $149, respectively, and should be read as launch prices rather than live quotes. Apple said AirPods 5 reduced external noise by up to 50 percent more than AirPods 4 with ANC, based on its stated testing context. Apple’s announcement.
Why the AirPods generations have separate numbers
AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max are three branches, not one family-wide generation count. AirPods 5 is the newest standard model in the chronology; AirPods Pro 3 is the newest Pro generation; AirPods Max 2 is the newest Max generation. A higher number in one line does not mean it came after, or supersedes, a product in another line.

Which AirPods are the newest?
As of September 30, 2026, the newest announced models are AirPods 5 in the standard line, AirPods Pro 3 in the Pro line, and AirPods Max 2 in the Max line. They serve different fit preferences and product branches, so “newest AirPods” does not identify just one model unless you specify the line.

Which changes are revisions rather than new generations?
AirPods Pro 2 with USB-C charging case
Apple announced a USB-C charging-case version of AirPods Pro (2nd generation) on September 12, 2023. It remains within the Pro 2 generation rather than becoming a separately numbered generation. Apple also noted dust resistance and lossless audio with Apple Vision Pro, subject to availability and software conditions. Apple said the cited iOS 17 features applied to both Lightning-case and USB-C-case Pro 2 models. Apple’s announcement.
AirPods Max with USB-C
Apple announced USB-C charging for AirPods Max alongside AirPods 4 in 2024. This was a connector revision, not a new Max generation; the next numbered Max model in this chronology was AirPods Max 2 in 2026. Apple’s 2024 announcement.

Different charging-case configurations
Charging-case options can distinguish configurations within a generation. For example, AirPods 2 was offered with a standard case or an optional Wireless Charging Case, while Apple announced AirPods 5 both on its own and with a Wireless Charging Case. Those configurations do not create extra generation numbers.
How to use the chronology when choosing a model
The release list tells you when Apple announced each product; it does not establish which one fits you best or whether a historical model remains available. Compare within the relevant product line, then check the features that matter to your use:

- Fit and form: standard AirPods are open-ear, Pro models are in-ear, and Max models are over-ear.
- Noise control: ANC is an announced configuration feature for AirPods 4, AirPods 4 with ANC, Pro models, and Max models; check the particular model and configuration rather than assuming it applies to every AirPods variant.

- Feature requirements: features such as Live Translation, lossless audio with Apple Vision Pro, or hearing-health tools may depend on compatible hardware, software, region, or availability. Check Apple’s linked announcement for the particular feature.
