The main difference is sensor size, but that alone does not determine which camera will make better photographs. Full frame measures 36 × 24 mm; digital medium format varies by system, and Hasselblad’s X System measures 43.8 × 32.9 mm—about 67% more sensor area than full frame, according to Hasselblad’s sensor-size guide. That extra area can provide more room for resolution, cropping and shallow depth of field, while full-frame systems offer a wide range of bodies and lenses, including options built for speed. The right choice depends on the camera and lens kit, what you photograph and how you use the files.

What do full frame and medium format mean?

Full frame refers to a digital sensor measuring 36 × 24 mm, the same dimensions as a 35mm film frame. “Medium format” is a broader category rather than a single digital sensor size. For example, Hasselblad’s X System uses a 43.8 × 32.9 mm sensor. Hasselblad says that format has approximately 67% more surface area than full frame; that figure describes sensor area, not a guaranteed increase in image quality, dynamic range or light sensitivity.

Sensor area and megapixels describe different things. Area is the physical size of the light-sensitive imaging surface; megapixels count the pixels recorded. Resolution, lens performance, sensor generation, exposure and processing all affect the final image. A larger sensor does not automatically produce a better photograph.

How the larger sensor changes framing

A lens’s focal length is a physical property and does not change when you mount it on a different sensor format. What changes is the field of view recorded by the sensor. A smaller sensor captures a narrower portion of the image projected by the lens; a larger sensor captures more of it.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

To get similar framing from the same camera position, a larger format generally needs a longer actual focal length. Crop factor is a way to compare angle of view, not optical magnification and not a change to the focal length printed on a lens. The factor also depends on the particular system: Fujifilm’s GFX guide describes GFX as 43.8 × 32.9 mm and gives an approximate 0.7× relationship to 35mm; Hasselblad gives about 0.79× for its X System. Treat these as system-specific approximations, not a universal conversion for medium format.

Depth of field and background blur

With equivalent framing and the same f-number, medium format can produce shallower depth of field than full frame. This can help separate a portrait subject from the background, but the visible result also depends on focal length, aperture, subject distance, background distance and lens design. A fast full-frame lens may create a similar background blur, and shallow focus is not always desirable—for example, when a portrait needs several faces or a product to remain sharp.

Compare lenses and actual shooting conditions rather than assuming the sensor label guarantees a particular look. The same framing and aperture are important conditions when evaluating the format difference.

How the formats differ in practical use

Decision What to weigh
Resolution, cropping and print size Medium-format systems may offer more room for fine detail, substantial cropping and large output. The specific sensor and lens matter more than the format name.
Depth of field and rendering At equivalent framing and f-number, medium format can give shallower depth of field. Decide whether that rendering suits the subject and whether you can keep the areas that matter in focus.
Action and speed Full frame spans a broad choice of systems, including bodies designed for high-speed capture. Check the particular camera’s autofocus and burst performance for moving subjects rather than assuming every camera in a format behaves alike.
Lens selection and framing Compare mount-compatible lenses for the angles of view, apertures and sizes you need. Equivalent framing may call for different actual focal lengths across formats.
Carrying and file handling Portability depends on the body-and-lens combination. Hasselblad characterizes medium-format files as larger and full-frame files as generally lighter; check the specific camera’s file sizes and your editing and storage workflow.
System cost Compare current local prices for a body plus the lenses you need. There is no established apples-to-apples current kit-price comparison here, so a general price ranking would be misleading.

Which format fits your photography?

Consider medium format if detail and cropping headroom matter most

Medium format is worth considering when you often make large prints, need latitude for significant cropping, or value the rendering possible with a larger sensor. Balance those advantages against the system’s available bodies and lenses, file sizes, workflow and the weight of the complete kit.

Consider full frame if you need a broad system or speed-oriented options

Full frame may suit photographers who want to choose among a broad range of bodies and lenses, including systems aimed at fast capture. The format itself does not guarantee better autofocus or burst performance; compare the models you would actually use against the needs of your subject.

Compare complete kits, not sensor labels

Before choosing, identify the lenses required for your usual field of view and aperture, then compare the corresponding bodies and lenses. Include handling, autofocus, burst needs, carrying weight, file workflow, intended output size and the depth of field you want. Those practical differences can matter more than the format alone.

A current medium-format example

Hasselblad’s sensor guide lists the X2D II 100C as a 100MP back-side illuminated CMOS medium-format camera, with 16-bit color, native ISO 50 and up to 15.3 stops of dynamic range. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent proof that it outperforms every full-frame camera. Fujifilm’s GFX cameras are another medium-format system example; use lenses compatible with the GFX mount and check the specifications of the particular body and lens you are considering.

What the format comparison cannot tell you

The cited manufacturer material does not establish a universal winner for low-light performance, dynamic range, color, autofocus, burst speed or overall image quality, nor does it supply a comparable current price ranking. Those outcomes vary with the camera, lens, exposure and processing. Hasselblad’s comparison puts the distinction succinctly: “Neither format determines the quality of a photograph by itself. They provide different foundations on which a photographer can build the image.” The quotation is attributed to the account “onlinestore hasselblad,” not to a named individual.
