What FuguIta does
FuguIta provides a removable-media environment intended to feel almost identical to OpenBSD. That makes it an option for trying the operating system or using an OpenBSD-based environment without first replacing the computer’s installed system. Its overview lists standard boot, a faster or lower-memory mode, memory-only operation, restoration of a saved USB environment, floppy-based file retrieval, and a maintenance and debugging shell. It also describes utilities for network setup, Japanese desktop configuration, media duplication, updates, and encrypted data storage. Which computers and architectures are listed?
The FuguIta project lists three current build architectures and identifies a fourth as a test version:

Architecture alone does not settle whether a particular machine will boot or whether its firmware, network adapter, and peripherals will work. Check the current FuguIta download information and the relevant OpenBSD platform documentation for the exact device.

Choose a boot medium and operating mode
Boot medium
The project lists USB memory, external SSD/HDD, and DVD as boot media. USB is a natural choice for a LiveUSB setup; use the medium and image instructions that match the target system. The guide covers both LiveUSB and LiveDVD creation. FuguIta Guide
Operating mode
Choose a mode based on the task and the computer’s available memory. Standard boot is the straightforward starting point. The project also describes a faster or lower-memory mode, memory-only operation, restoration of a saved USB environment, and a maintenance/debugging shell. Its overview does not provide a universal performance comparison, so the mode descriptions should not be read as measured speed or memory guarantees. FuguIta project overview

How to make and start FuguIta media
- Check the current release and image. Open the official FuguIta overview and follow its current download information to select an image for the target architecture. Build names and patch levels change.
- Follow the official media-creation procedure. Use the FuguIta Guide for the LiveUSB or LiveDVD process and its exact commands. Do not assume that instructions for one release or target apply unchanged to another.
- Boot from the prepared medium. Select the removable device using the target computer’s firmware or boot-device menu. The exact key and firmware steps depend on the device and are not universal FuguIta instructions.
- Set startup options as needed. The guide describes choices including boot device, memory filesystem size, operating mode, keyboard, password, and network settings. Follow the options shown for the selected release and machine.
- Confirm device support for the intended use. If network access or a particular peripheral matters, check platform-specific OpenBSD information before relying on it; a listed architecture is not a guarantee that every device works.
What version is current?
The FuguIta overview reports version 7.9, based on OpenBSD 7.9, first released on May 26, 2026. Its latest listed builds at the time reflected in that overview are FuguIta-7.9-{i386,amd64,arm64}-202609301, with OpenBSD 7.9 patches 022 through 030 applied. Because those details can change, check the project’s current download listing before preparing or refreshing media. FuguIta project overview
OpenBSD’s official site says OpenBSD 7.9 was released on May 19, 2026. The project describes OpenBSD as a freely available, multi-platform 4.4BSD-based UNIX-like operating system whose goals emphasize correctness, security, standardization, and portability. Is FuguIta a good way to try OpenBSD?
FuguIta is suited to someone who wants to boot an OpenBSD-based system from removable media rather than install it on the computer’s internal disk. The practical choice is to match the image to the target architecture, use the current release-specific media guide, and select a boot mode that fits the intended task. For a particular PC, board, or older PowerPC Mac, hardware support still needs to be checked individually.
