You can use Claude Code to explore a Rust codebase, make focused changes, and run tests—but those capabilities do not establish that a particular application shipped or is production-ready. A credible account of shipping Rust must show what was built, which checks passed, how it was deployed, and what happened afterward. Without project-specific evidence, this is a practical workflow for a TypeScript developer, not a verified first-person production story.

Can you build a Rust project if you mostly know TypeScript?

Yes, prior TypeScript experience can help you reason about program structure, data flow, and tests. But Rust has its own type system, ownership rules, error-handling patterns, and conventions; familiarity with TypeScript does not remove the need to learn them. Treat the compiler and the official Rust documentation as part of the learning loop rather than asking an AI coding tool to translate an entire application at once.

The Rust Project’s documentation hub points learners to The Rust Programming Language and to documentation for Cargo and Clippy. The official book is an optional structured reference, not proof that any particular developer used it or a prerequisite for using Claude Code.

How do you use Claude Code to learn a Rust codebase?

Claude Code is a terminal-based coding tool. Anthropic documents workflows for exploring a codebase, editing files, running tests, and debugging tasks in its core tasks and workflows guide. That describes supported capabilities, not a guarantee that its suggestions are correct or that a project will meet production requirements.

Start with orientation, not implementation

Install and authenticate Claude Code using Anthropic’s current setup guide; prerequisites and installation methods can change. Start it from the project directory, then ask it to map the repository before requesting a feature. A useful prompt asks for the application entry point, major modules, Cargo targets, existing tests, and the path a request takes through the code. Verify the answer against the files rather than treating it as authoritative.

Make one small, reviewable change at a time

Ask for a proposed plan, inspect the relevant files, and implement one vertical slice: a small behavior that can be followed through its input, Rust types, error paths, and tests. Before accepting a change, make sure you can explain what it does, why its dependencies are appropriate, and how failures are handled. Keep track of which changes you reviewed and which actions the tool proposed or executed.

Anthropic’s CLI reference describes interactive and print modes, permission controls, JSON output, and a maximum-turn setting. These can help shape a reviewable or scripted workflow, but the CLI’s flags and behavior may evolve; consult the live reference before relying on a particular option.

How do you test and lint Rust before shipping?

Use the checks that match the project’s actual Cargo targets, and report what you ran rather than implying that a tool or command was used when it was not. The Rust Project’s documentation hub links to Cargo and explains that developers commonly invoke rustfmt through cargo fmt. Formatting checks style consistency; they do not establish behavioral correctness.

Clippy’s usage documentation describes running lints on a Cargo project with cargo clippy, configuring lint categories, and denying warnings in CI. A team may choose to make warnings fail its CI run, but a clean Clippy result is not proof of correctness, security, or release readiness.

  • Tests: Identify the project’s relevant test targets, run them, and record the result. Do not claim a pass unless it was observed.
  • Formatting: Use the project’s formatting check, commonly cargo fmt, and distinguish formatting from functional verification.
  • Linting: Run the project’s Clippy checks and state whether the team configures warnings as errors.
  • Review: Inspect the changed code, error handling, dependencies, and tests. Tool output is feedback for review, not a replacement for it.

What does production-ready Rust mean for this project?

“Production” is a claim about a specific application and its operating context, not a result established by using Rust, Claude Code, or a clean local check. To substantiate it, describe the evidence readers need to understand what actually shipped:
