Image-to-video AI turns an existing still into a short moving shot, giving creators control over the scene’s starting composition while they direct what changes: the camera, the subject, or both. Text-to-video begins with a written description and generates a scene from it. In production, these tools are best understood as ways to make short inserts, B-roll, transitions, concept visuals, and social or marketing assets—not as replacements for shooting, editing, and finishing a complete video.
What changes when a still becomes a video?
With image-to-video, you choose the source image: a photograph, illustration, AI-generated image, or other static graphic. The image establishes the visual starting point. Runway describes its input image as the first frame, carrying information such as composition, subject, lighting, and style. A motion prompt can then concentrate on what happens next—for example, how the camera moves and what the subject does. This is a practical description of the workflow in vendor documentation, not a claim about how every model works internally.
Text-to-video takes a different route: you describe a scene and the model generates one without a chosen still serving as its visual starting point. The distinction matters in production. Starting with a still can help preserve a selected look or composition; starting with text leaves more of the scene’s visual choices to the generation process.

Adobe documents uses including B-roll, cutaways, transitions, animated product photos, presentations, campaigns, social content, and background visuals. Its examples also include animated water, atmospheric overlays, motion graphics, and landscape, plant, or animal B-roll. These are potential building blocks: a shot can fill an editorial gap or help communicate an idea, but it still needs review for visual quality and fit with the surrounding footage.

The useful unit is often a short shot, not a finished sequence. A creator can generate several clips, select the ones that serve the story, and assemble and refine them in an editor. The result may need timing adjustments, continuity work, or replacement if it does not meet the project’s requirements.
How to direct motion from a still
Adobe describes a workflow in which you upload a still, optionally provide a final-frame image, choose available output settings such as resolution and aspect ratio, select camera motion such as a pan, zoom, or tilt, preview, and export. The output is described as a short MP4 clip; supported resolution and duration depend on the selected model. Specific controls and availability can vary, so check the options shown for the model and account you are using.
For prompting, Runway offers this as a starting structure: “The camera [motion description] as the subject [action]. [Additional descriptions]” The guide says there is no required formula. The practical principle is to make the requested change clear: describe the camera movement and the subject’s action, then add useful details. If the action needs an order, Runway says to use sequential natural-language instructions or timestamps.

- Choose and inspect the still. Use an image whose composition and subject you want to carry into the shot. Check it for blur, visual artifacts, or details that may be difficult to animate.
- Describe what moves. State the camera motion and subject action in plain language. Keep the requested action appropriate to the clip duration.
- Set the available shot controls. In Adobe’s documented workflow, this may include an optional final-frame image, resolution, aspect ratio, and camera motion. Options depend on the selected model.
- Preview and assess the result. Check whether the motion supports the intended edit and whether the subject and visual details remain usable.
- Export and finish in an editor. Adjust timing and combine the generated shot with other material as needed.
Extending a shot—and handling the seam
A single generation may be too short for the intended sequence. Runway describes a way to continue motion: extract the previous generation’s last frame and use it as the image input for the next generation. The new clip can then be combined with the earlier one in a video editor.
This process creates a join that needs editorial attention. Runway’s guide specifically notes that the shared frame may need to be removed when clips are combined, and that an editor can be used to adjust timing. A reused frame provides a visual handoff, but it does not by itself guarantee seamless continuity in motion, subject details, or pacing.
Quality, rights, and access to check before using a tool
Source-image quality
Runway advises starting with a high-quality image without visual artifacts. It warns that problems such as blurry hands or faces can become more pronounced in generated video. Treat this as a reason to inspect the input and output, not as a quantified failure rate.

Rights to the image and the generated result
Adobe says users should have rights to images they upload. Adobe also describes its Firefly model as trained on licensed and public-domain content, while explaining that commercial use of generated video depends on the uploaded source image not violating copyright, trademark, privacy, publicity, or other rights. These are Adobe’s statements about its products and workflow, not a general legal guarantee for other models or for every source image. Review the terms that apply to the specific tool and assets in your project.

Adobe’s support page says video features can vary by location, user type, regulatory requirements, and plan. A workflow described in product documentation may not be available to every account or in every region. Confirm feature access and model-specific output options in your account before building them into a production schedule.
Product status can change
OpenAI states that Sora is no longer available as a product as of April 26, 2026. Its Sora 2 system card, published September 30, 2025, discusses synchronized audio, steerability, realism, and risks involving likenesses or misleading generated material; that information should not be mistaken for current product access. The discontinuation notice also appears on OpenAI’s Sora page. Check current official product status before relying on any named tool.

How to compare image-to-video tools for a real project
Official feature pages explain documented workflows, but they do not establish a controlled comparison of output quality, speed, or value. Choose based on what the production needs and verify the details for the specific model and account.
| Production question | What to verify |
|---|---|
| How much control do you need over the starting look? | Whether the tool can animate a chosen still, or whether the workflow starts from a text description. |
| How can you direct motion? | Available camera movement and subject-action prompting, plus any first- or final-frame controls. |
| Can you continue a sequence? | Whether the tool supports reference frames or sequence extension, and what editing is needed to join clips. |
| What can you export? | Clip duration, resolution, aspect ratio, and file format; Adobe says these specifications can vary by model. |
| Can the project use the tool and source image? | Image permissions, model-specific terms, account and plan conditions, geography, and applicable regulations. |
Adobe Firefly’s documented image-to-video workflow is one named example of animating a still and choosing motion controls. Runway’s guide offers practical advice for prompting motion and extending a clip from its final frame. Neither set of official documentation establishes that one tool is better than another; the right choice depends on the requirements above and the results you review in your own workflow.
