To turn an image into a video, upload it as the visual starting point, describe the movement you want, and generate a clip. The biggest workflow difference is how much control you get over the beginning and ending frames, camera movement, and later editing. Runway’s guide focuses on motion-led prompting; Adobe Firefly offers first- and optional last-frame controls and lists several partner models; Luma describes image-led generation and reframing. Kling 3.0 and Pika 2.2 are included here as options documented through Adobe interfaces, not as fully compared standalone services.

How image-to-video workflows work

An image-to-video model uses an uploaded still as the visual reference for a moving clip. The image supplies much of the initial composition, subject, lighting, and style. Your prompt should therefore focus on what changes: the subject’s action, movement in the environment, and any camera motion, including direction, pace, or timing.

Some workflows let you provide only a starting frame; others also accept a last-frame image to guide where the clip should end. These controls are not interchangeable across services or models. Output settings and access can also vary, so check the current interface before settling on a workflow.

Runway: direct motion prompting and iteration

Runway’s image-to-video guide, optimized for Gen-4.5, recommends keeping the prompt focused on motion rather than restating what is already visible in the image. It suggests starting with the critical movement and adding or removing details over successive generations. Runway describes the prompt’s role as explaining “what should happen — the motion, camera work, and temporal progression you want to see using clear, direct language.” Runway Help Center: Image to Video Prompting Guide

For example, with a still of a person standing in a field, a motion-focused prompt might describe the person turning toward the camera as grass moves in a breeze and the camera slowly pushes closer. If the result moves too much or in the wrong direction, simplify or revise those motion instructions. Runway’s getting-started information says Gen-4.5 supports both text-to-video and image-to-video. This workflow suits creators who want to direct movement in words and refine it through prompt changes. It is a description of the documented workflow, not a performance ranking.

Adobe Firefly: keyframes, camera options, and clip assembly

In Firefly’s web image-to-video workflow, an uploaded or generated image can serve as the first frame, and an optional image can be set as the last frame. Adobe documents resolution and aspect-ratio controls, as well as camera-motion controls when only a first frame is set. Available settings depend on the selected video model. Adobe’s image-to-video page lists Firefly Video and partner models including Veo 3.1, Ray3.14, Runway Gen-4.5, and Kling 3.0. Adobe describes using generated clips as inserts or B-roll and refining them in the Firefly video editor. That establishes options within Adobe’s interface; it is not a complete comparison of the listed providers’ standalone services. Adobe Firefly: Image to video

Firefly is a useful fit when you want to set image keyframes and camera options in the generation workflow, then assemble or refine clips in the same environment. Check the selected model’s controls rather than assuming every model offers the same settings.

Luma: image-led generation and reframing

Luma’s official product pages describe starting with a source image to generate moving footage. Its general video-generation page also describes Reframe, which can prepare a generated clip for another aspect ratio without rebuilding the video from scratch. Luma Dream Machine Luma Learning Hub

Kling 3.0: documented as an Adobe interface option

Adobe lists Kling 3.0 among the model choices in its image-to-video interface. This supports considering it as a partner model available through Firefly; it does not establish Kling’s standalone controls, pricing, or access conditions. Adobe Firefly: Image to video

Pika 2.2: first and last frames in Firefly Boards

Adobe’s Firefly Boards partner-model documentation lists Pika 2.2 and describes first- and last-frame image inputs as fixed points that guide the beginning and ending of generation. Choose a workflow based on the controls you need

  • For prompt-led motion refinement: Runway’s Gen-4.5 guide lays out a concise prompt-and-iterate approach focused on action, environment, and camera movement.
  • For explicit start and end images: Firefly’s web workflow documents an optional last frame alongside the first frame. Firefly Boards also documents first- and last-frame inputs for Pika 2.2.
  • For generation followed by reframing: Luma describes using Reframe to adapt a generated clip to another aspect ratio.
  • For several model choices in one interface: Firefly lists its own model and partner options, including Veo 3.1, Ray3.14, Runway Gen-4.5, and Kling 3.0. The available controls depend on the selected model.

These are workflow distinctions, not a five-way quality test. The available official details do not establish equivalent standalone features across all five options.

A practical image-to-video process

  1. Choose a suitable still. Use an image you have permission to upload. Decide whether one starting image is enough or whether you want to guide the ending with a second image.
  2. Describe movement, not the whole picture. State the subject’s action, relevant environmental motion, and camera behavior. Keep the first prompt focused on the motion that matters most.
  3. Generate and inspect the result. Check whether the subject, background, and camera move as intended. If not, change the relevant motion instruction rather than adding unrelated scene details.
  4. Refine or change the framing. Iterate on the prompt where the workflow supports it, use keyframes when available, or use a reframing feature for a different aspect ratio.
  5. Confirm delivery settings and access. Before generating, verify the selected model, aspect ratio, resolution, duration, and any credit or plan requirements in the current interface.

Check image rights and model availability

Adobe advises users to make sure they have rights to images they upload. Adobe says its Firefly model is trained on licensed content and public-domain content where copyright has expired. That statement applies to Adobe’s Firefly model; it should not be treated as a guarantee about partner models, competing services, or every use of a generated clip. Adobe Firefly FAQ

Adobe also says video capabilities may vary by geographic location, user type, and regulatory requirements. Model selection can change which settings are available. Confirm availability and the terms that apply to your account and intended use in the service itself.
