Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo learn JavaScript and build your first website, learn the web’s three core technologies in sequence: HTML for content and structure, CSS for appearance and layout, and JavaScript for interactive behavior. Practice them together in a small project, use Git to track your work, check the result in a browser, then publish it with a host suited to the project. You do not need a framework, custom domain, or backend to put a simple static site online.
What you need to learn before you deploy a website
A website is not made with JavaScript alone. HTML gives content its structure, CSS controls its presentation and layout, and JavaScript adds behavior such as responding to a button or checking a form. Each technology has a distinct job, and learning how they work together is more useful than treating JavaScript as a substitute for the others. MDN’s Your first website module introduces these roles through a small project.
MDN describes its learning area as a beginner foundation intended to bring learners to a comfortable level, not make them experts. Its self-paced Curriculum, last updated in October 2025, includes accessibility, design, version control, and tools as well as language fundamentals. Use it as a map, not a promise of a fixed time to mastery or employment.
A practical learning sequence
1. Set up your workspace and learn the basic web workflow
Get comfortable making folders and files, using a code editor, and opening your work in a browser. Learn to use browser developer tools to inspect a page and diagnose problems. MDN’s environment setup guide covers the basic software setup, while its curriculum introduces the web platform and standards.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Build a content page with semantic HTML
Start with a page that has a clear purpose, such as a personal introduction, a hobby guide, or a simple event page. Add headings, paragraphs, links, lists, images, and—if the project needs them—forms. Choose HTML elements for what their content means rather than how they look. Meaningful structure supports usability and accessibility and gives CSS and JavaScript a sound foundation. MDN groups this material in its core learning modules.
3. Use CSS for styling and responsive layout
Learn selectors, typography, color, spacing, and layout. Then check the page at different viewport sizes and adjust it so its content remains readable and usable on phones as well as larger screens. MDN’s curriculum places CSS fundamentals, text styling, and layout before JavaScript fundamentals; that order lets you make a complete, readable page before adding behavior.

4. Learn JavaScript fundamentals and add one useful interaction
Practice the language fundamentals in small exercises, then connect JavaScript to your page. Good first features include a button that changes displayed content, a form interaction, a show-and-hide control, or a simple animation. Keep the behavior understandable and make sure it works with the page’s HTML rather than using JavaScript to create structure that HTML should provide. MDN’s first-site guide explains JavaScript’s role in adding interactivity.
5. Build accessibility and version control into the project
Keep headings in a sensible order, give images appropriate text alternatives, label form controls, and ensure interactive controls can be used clearly. Test the page with a keyboard as well as a mouse. Use Git to record changes as you work; a GitHub repository can store and share the code. Accessibility and version control are part of the skills covered by the MDN core curriculum, not extras to postpone until after a site is finished.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
6. Test the finished small project
Before publishing, open the site in a browser and check that links, images, layout, and JavaScript behavior work. Try more than one viewport size, and use developer tools to investigate errors. A deliberately limited first project makes it easier to find and fix problems than a large application with features you have not yet learned to maintain.
Choose a first project with a clear finish line
Pick a project that can be made from a few pages or a single page and does not depend on accounts, payments, or server-side data. For example, a hobby guide can include semantic headings and links, a responsive CSS layout, and a JavaScript button that reveals a short tip. That gives you practice with structure, styling, behavior, and testing without requiring a complex application.

MDN’s first-website pathway walks through planning, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and publication. MDN advises beginners to start small because creating a professional website takes substantial work. A first published project is a learning milestone, not evidence that every production-site concern has been solved.

Deployment means putting the site online at a web address so other people can visit it. For a project made of browser files such as HTML, CSS, images, and client-side JavaScript, a static hosting service is usually the straightforward route. If the project needs server-side code or backend services, choose hosting that supports those needs instead. MDN compares publishing approaches in its guide to publishing your website.

| Route | When it fits | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| GitHub Pages | A simple website whose files can be published from a code repository. | MDN describes it as a publishing option for website code. Check the current service documentation for setup steps and limits. |
| Netlify | A static site when you want a hosting platform with additional features. | MDN describes it as a static hosting platform with additional features. Confirm current features, setup, and plan terms with the provider. |
| Fly.io | An application that needs backend services rather than only static files. | MDN identifies it as more suitable for apps needing backend services. Confirm current requirements and terms with the provider. |
Provider capabilities, prices, and limits can change. Compare the current service information before choosing; the important initial distinction is whether your project is static or needs a backend. A custom domain is optional for a first site: publishing it at the address provided by a host is enough to make it publicly reachable.
Publication checklist
- Organize the site files. Confirm the HTML entry page and the CSS, JavaScript, and image files it uses are in the expected locations.
- Choose hosting that matches the project. Use static hosting for browser-only files; select a backend-capable option if the app needs server-side services.
- Publish using the host’s current instructions. MDN’s publishing guide covers getting site files online, including GitHub Pages. Exact setup depends on the provider and its current interface.
- Visit the public address and test again. Check the deployed page, not just the local copy, and verify that files load and interactions work.
Uploading files to a web server is one way to publish, but hosts may also provide deployment through a connected version-control repository. The provider’s instructions determine the exact steps; after deployment, use the public address to check the live result.
What to learn after your first deployment
Once you can build and publish a small site, continue strengthening the foundations: write clearer JavaScript, improve responsive layouts, test accessibility, and use version control consistently. Frameworks and other tools can be useful later, and MDN includes them in its broader curriculum, but they need not be the center of a first website. Add a framework when a project’s needs justify the extra concepts, rather than treating it as a prerequisite for putting a basic site online.
