Fright Train can scratch some of the monster-fighting, scavenging and escalating-survival itch of Call of Duty Zombies, but it is a very different kind of alternative. It is a single-player, third-person survival-horror roguelite set aboard a train in Antarctica, where keeping the locomotive running matters alongside staying alive. The dog protagonist is part of its offbeat premise; the bigger question is whether you want a solo horror run rather than cooperative Zombies.
What is Fright Train?
In Fright Train, you play Doug Barker, an anthropomorphic dog and paranormal special agent responding to a distress signal from the L.R.S. Great White, a locomotive research station racing through Antarctica. You fight creatures in the train’s corridors, scavenge for resources and tend to the train. Some repairs may require leaving its relative safety and facing the cold and danger outside.
The publisher describes the game as “Resident Evil Mercenaries meets old-school CoD Zombies on the Snowpiercer.” That comparison points to monster combat and survival pressure, but the official framing also emphasizes horror, inventory management, train upkeep and roguelite adaptation. GameSpot likewise described a blend of third-person gunplay, inventory management, mascot-style characters and roguelite structure. These are descriptions of the game, not evidence that it reproduces the feel of a particular Zombies mode.

Survive threats while managing resources
The common ground is a loop of fighting monsters, gathering resources, improving equipment and trying to survive the next threat. The demo description adds credits for unlocking train cars and rooms, vending machines, weapon upgrades, storm-triggered enemy waves and extraction objectives. Those details describe the demo’s advertised systems; they should not be taken as an independent assessment of how well the loop works.

Train upkeep changes the priorities
Fright Train makes the locomotive itself part of the survival problem. Scavenging and keeping systems running sit alongside combat, and a repair can send you outside into the Antarctic environment. The publisher sums up that balance this way: “Keeping the train moving is just as important as keeping yourself alive.” That maintenance angle is a substantial difference from treating a Zombies run as combat and upgrades alone.
Runs are meant to demand adaptation
The publisher says roguelite mechanics require players to adapt equipment and strategy between runs. Its demo page also describes procedurally generated train areas. Together, those advertised features suggest variation between attempts, rather than a fixed sequence to master once. They do not establish how much variety a particular player will encounter.

The biggest difference: Fright Train is single-player
Steam describes Fright Train as a single-player game. That makes the comparison a poor fit if what you most want from Call of Duty Zombies is playing cooperatively with friends. Fright Train may offer a related solo survival-and-upgrade loop, but its stated player count does not support presenting it as a co-op substitute.

Doug Barker’s unusual appearance adds a mascot-like tone, but it does not by itself tell you whether the horror or action will suit you.

Who is likely to enjoy it?
- Consider it if you want a solo game built around fighting creatures, scavenging and managing limited resources, and you like the added pressure of maintaining a moving train.
- Be cautious if your main reason for seeking a Zombies alternative is cooperative play. The game is described as single-player.
- Keep expectations flexible if you are drawn specifically to the roguelite or procedural elements. Those systems are advertised, but the available descriptions do not quantify run-to-run variety.
- Do not judge it by the dog alone. Doug Barker is a distinctive lead character; the more useful fit questions are whether you want third-person survival horror and whether a solo run suits you.
Release, price and demo details

What early player reports can—and cannot—tell you
Steam community reviews captured in September 2026 included positive reactions to the survival-horror and Zombies-like mix, alongside individual reports of controller, inventory, enemy-wave and softlock issues. Some reviewers also said developers were patching problems. These are anecdotal reports, not a measured bug rate or a reliable statement about the build available now. Treat them as reasons to check recent player feedback, not as proof that a particular issue is common or remains unfixed.
