Yes—you can get Freeview without a separate box if your TV has a built-in Freeview tuner. Connect a working aerial and tune the television to receive live terrestrial channels. For catch-up and on-demand viewing, a compatible Freeview Play TV also needs broadband. If your TV lacks the required features, a Freeview Play recorder can add them without replacing the screen.

Freeview says TVs bought after 2010 generally have Freeview built in, but that is broad guidance—not confirmation for a particular set. Check the exact model specification for a Freeview tuner and, if wanted, Freeview Play support. See Freeview’s equipment guide and Freeview Play information.
Do you need an aerial?
To receive live Freeview channels through the TV’s guide, you need a working aerial connected to the television. A satellite dish does not receive Freeview; check Freeview’s guidance on satellite dishes if that is the only connection at your home.

Available channels vary by location and reception conditions. Use Freeview’s service and availability information to check what may be available at your address; its page describes more than 100 channels, but not every household can receive every one.

If reception is poor
- Check that the aerial cable is undamaged and firmly connected at both ends.
- Make sure the aerial is positioned correctly.
- Freeview recommends a wideband aerial for best results. If a new aerial or repositioning is needed, consider a qualified installer.
Freeview cites £150 as a typical aerial replacement cost based on industry guidance, but gives no publication year and says costs vary with location and installation complexity. What does Freeview Play add?
Freeview Play combines live terrestrial television with connected catch-up and on-demand services on compatible TVs and recorders. The live channels still rely on an aerial; the connected services need broadband. Freeview states a minimum broadband speed of 2 Mbps for catch-up and on-demand services, not for receiving live terrestrial channels. See what Freeview Play includes.
If your current TV has a Freeview tuner but not Freeview Play, it can still show live channels. To add Freeview Play features while keeping that TV, Freeview says you can use a compatible Freeview Play recorder. Check the specific recorder and TV instructions for connections and setup; recording, pausing and rewinding depend on the equipment. See Freeview’s advice for devices without Freeview Play.

How to set up Freeview on a TV without a box
- Connect a working aerial cable to the TV’s aerial input.
- Switch on the TV and choose the appropriate TV or channel setup option. The exact menu wording differs by model.
- Start the automatic channel tuning or scanning process, then wait for it to finish. Freeview estimates tuning takes three to four minutes.
- If you want Freeview Play, connect the TV to broadband using Wi-Fi or Ethernet and complete any on-screen connected-service setup. A smart TV may also ask you to configure Wi-Fi during initial setup.

Does free-to-watch Freeview mean you do not need a TV Licence?
No. In the UK, the licence requirement depends on what you watch, not whether you use a separate box or pay a subscription. TV Licensing says a licence is needed to watch live TV on any channel or streaming service, or to use BBC iPlayer. It says a licence is not needed if you watch only on-demand programmes on other TV services and never watch live TV or use BBC iPlayer. Check TV Licensing’s current guidance for your circumstances.
