To add freehand drawing to a web page, use the Canvas 2D API to render strokes and Pointer Events to track input. Pointer Events provide one input model for mouse, pen, and touch; your code records the active pointer’s position, draws to each new position, and clears that pointer’s stroke state when input ends or is canceled.
How canvas drawing and pointer input work together
A <canvas> is a bitmap drawing surface. Its 2D context provides the methods for drawing paths and strokes, but it does not know when or where a user wants to draw. Pointer Events supply that input. Combining them lets a short handler draw a line segment between successive pointer positions.
Pointer Events cover mouse, pen, and touch with the same event model, and can represent multiple pointers at once. That makes them a straightforward fit for a drawing surface compared with separate mouse and touch handlers. For multi-touch or concurrent input, keep independent stroke state for each pointer ID rather than sharing one previous position.
Build a basic freehand canvas
1. Define the canvas drawing area
Give the canvas intrinsic width and height attributes. These values define its coordinate space. Changing only its CSS size scales the bitmap, which can distort the drawing; the maximum usable dimensions vary by browser and environment.

</canvas>2. Get the 2D context
Call canvas.getContext("2d") to obtain the drawing context. Check that the result is not null before using it: a context lookup can fail if the context is unsupported or the canvas has already entered another context mode.
3. Track each active pointer and draw segments
On pointerdown, store the pointer ID and its starting coordinates. On pointermove, draw from that pointer’s previous position to its current position only if it is active. On pointerup or pointercancel, remove its state so a finished or canceled stroke cannot continue accidentally.

Make touch drawing behave as intended
On a touch screen, the browser may interpret a gesture as scrolling or zooming instead of drawing. If the canvas should own touch gestures, set touch-action: none on that surface:

}This suppresses default touch behavior on the canvas, so apply it deliberately. It is appropriate for a dedicated drawing area, but should not disable gestures across unrelated parts of the page.
Make canvas content accessible
Canvas exposes pixels, not semantic information about the objects drawn into them. Alternate text inside the canvas is useful as fallback content, but significant information and actions should also be available through accessible HTML markup and controls. For example, provide real buttons for actions such as clearing or submitting a drawing instead of making those actions available only through pixels on the canvas.

When to consider OffscreenCanvas
For a simple sketch pad, drawing directly through the regular canvas context is usually the simpler approach. If complex rendering work blocks the main thread and makes other interface elements less responsive, OffscreenCanvas can move rendering work to a worker. It adds implementation complexity, so it is an optimization to consider when the workload warrants it rather than a requirement for basic freehand drawing.
