FreeBASIC is a free, open-source command-line compiler for BASIC. It aims for QuickBASIC source compatibility, but it is not a complete drop-in clone: choose its -lang qb dialect for closer compatibility, since the default -lang fb dialect adds newer features and has differences that may require changes to older programs. The compiler does not include a graphical editor or IDE.

What is FreeBASIC?

FreeBASIC is a compiler that turns BASIC source files—typically saved with the .bas extension—into executable programs. The project describes it as self-hosting, meaning the compiler itself is written in FreeBASIC. It is free and open source, and its language design includes syntax compatibility goals for QuickBASIC.

Despite that compatibility goal, FreeBASIC is a distinct compiler with multiple dialects and platform-specific requirements. The official welcome and compatibility overview and features and dialects documentation explain the distinctions.

How compatible is it with QuickBASIC?

Compatibility depends in part on the dialect used to compile the program. FreeBASIC’s -lang qb option is intended to improve source compatibility with QuickBASIC. The default -lang fb dialect supports newer FreeBASIC features and differs from QuickBASIC in some respects, so older programs may need edits before they compile or behave as intended. Neither the compatibility goal nor the QB dialect guarantees that every QuickBASIC program will work unchanged.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

When evaluating an existing program, check which language features it uses, as well as the operating-system APIs and libraries it depends on. A source file can be syntactically compatible while still relying on platform-specific facilities that need separate consideration.

Does FreeBASIC include an IDE?

No. FreeBASIC’s compiler, fbc, is a command-line program, not a graphical code editor or IDE. You can write a .bas file in a text editor and invoke the compiler from a terminal. If you prefer a graphical workflow, you can use a separate editor or IDE that supports calling the compiler; those are optional software choices, not components of FreeBASIC itself.

Platforms and toolchain requirements

The project documents support for Windows, Linux, and DOS, and its release page also lists FreeBSD packages. The exact packages, architectures, and dependencies vary. Consult the current release listings and installation guide for the package and instructions applicable to your system; older Linux dependency instructions may not match every current distribution.

Compiling a program requires more than choosing a source dialect. FreeBASIC relies on toolchain components including GNU binutils. The project README says GCC is used to generate assembly for architectures other than 32-bit. Cross-compiling also requires suitable target libraries and tools: passing a target option changes platform-specific compiler settings, but does not install the necessary dependencies.

Compile and run a first program

  1. Create the source file. In a text editor, save a small BASIC program as hello.bas. For example:
    PRINT "Hello, world!"
  2. Open a terminal in the file’s directory. If the compiler is not on your system path, use the platform-appropriate executable name or provide its full path.
  3. Compile it. Run fbc hello.bas. The exact command or executable path can vary with the installed package and platform.
  4. Run the result. Launch the executable produced by the compiler using the method appropriate for your operating system. If compilation fails, check the compiler output and verify that required toolchain components are installed.

The project repository includes an example and describes the command-line workflow in its README.

Where to get FreeBASIC documentation

Start with the official FAQ, installation guide, and the language and dialect references. The project identifies online documentation as its most up-to-date documentation, while warning that some wiki features may not be present in the latest official release. For version-specific behavior, check the documentation against the release you have installed.

Is FreeBASIC the right choice?

  • Consider it if you want a free BASIC compiler, are comfortable using a command line, or want to work with QuickBASIC-style source while accounting for dialect and platform differences.
  • Plan for extra work if you need to port an existing QuickBASIC project, rely on platform-specific APIs, or want to cross-compile. Check the source’s dependencies and arrange the relevant target toolchain before assuming it will build.
  • Choose a separate editor or IDE if you want a graphical editing experience; it is not bundled with the compiler.

The releases page inspected for this article displayed version 1.10.1 as its latest release. That is a point-in-time listing, not a promise that it remains current; check the releases page for the version available now.
