You can review and clear Windows storage with built-in tools—no third-party cleaner required. Start in Settings to see what is taking up space, remove only files you recognize, and check the available space afterward. Ten minutes is a useful target, not a guaranteed finish time or a promise of a particular amount recovered.
1. See what is using your drive
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Let Windows calculate storage usage, then inspect the categories, such as installed apps, temporary files, and system and reserved storage. Labels can vary by Windows version.
- Use the category sizes to decide where to look first. If the largest category is personal files or apps, review those deliberately rather than deleting them automatically.

2. Review Cleanup recommendations
In Storage settings, open Cleanup recommendations if it appears. Windows may suggest temporary files, previous Windows installations, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, or rarely used apps.

- Open each recommendation and check the listed items and displayed size.
- Select only what you recognize and intend to remove. Treat large personal files and apps as decisions, not routine cleanup targets.
- Pause if you are unsure whether a file is backed up or still needed.
3. Choose between a one-time review and recurring cleanup

Set up Storage Sense carefully
- Go to Settings > System > Storage, then open Storage Sense. The exact labels may vary by Windows version.
- Choose whether and how often it runs, and review what it is set to delete before enabling or changing it.
- Pay particular attention to Downloads and cloud content: Storage Sense does not manage either by default unless you configure it to do so.
Storage Sense works on the system drive, which Microsoft says is usually C:. Microsoft describes it as a way to automatically free space by removing items you do not need, such as temporary files and items in the Recycle Bin. See Manage drive space with Storage Sense.

Use Disk Cleanup if useful
Search Windows for Disk Cleanup, open it, choose a drive, and review the file types shown before confirming removal. Do not select an unfamiliar item just to clear more space.
Before removing a previous Windows installation
A recommendation for Previous Windows installation(s) needs special care. Microsoft says the previous Windows version is automatically deleted ten days after an upgrade. Removing it sooner can delete Windows.old and the option to return to the previous version; the deletion cannot be undone for that purpose. Skip this item if you may need to roll back. Check the result—and know what cleanup can solve
Return to Settings > System > Storage and check available space. The result depends on what is on your PC; Microsoft’s reviewed guidance does not establish a typical amount a ten-minute cleanup will recover.
More free space can help when low storage is contributing to a problem, but it is not a general speed-up guarantee. Microsoft notes that low disk space can affect device performance and make it difficult to receive system upgrades. As a reference, Microsoft says feature updates typically need 6 GB–11 GB or more of free space, while quality updates typically need 2 GB–3 GB or more; actual needs vary with optional content and the update path. If personal files are what fill the system drive, moving photos or videos to external storage is an option, not a requirement. Check that files are safely copied before removing them from the PC.
