For a free training signup campaign, Kit is the more accommodating choice if your priority is a larger free subscriber allowance and basic signup tools. Mailchimp’s Free plan has a much smaller contact and email-send cap. But if you need automated reminders or replay follow-ups, compare paid-plan access before deciding: neither platform’s free features should be assumed to include the sequence you want, and neither is a complete event-registration or attendance-management system.

What matters when choosing an email platform for a free training

A training campaign needs more than a signup form. Consider the whole path: how many people may register, how you will identify those registrants, how many invitations and reminders you will send, and what happens after the session. Your choice depends on these requirements, not on a general claim that one platform is better.

  • Expected audience: Compare your likely contact count with each platform’s current free-plan ceiling.
  • Email volume: Estimate sends across invitations, reminders, and follow-ups, including any daily limit.
  • Automation: Confirm that your intended plan supports the specific scheduled sequence you need.
  • Signup experience: Check whether the form or landing page can be styled and branded as you want.
  • Connections: Verify that the platform works with your website, booking, or course tools. These integrations are not established by the product details compared here.

Registration capture is not attendance tracking. You may still need a separate event or webinar tool to deliver the training and record who attended.

Forms and landing pages Unlimited forms and landing pages on Free: Kit pricing. Signup forms and hosted landing pages are available; Mailchimp says Free users can try marketing tools including these: Mailchimp plan details.

Automated reminders and follow-ups Visual automations and the automation template library are listed for Creator and Creator Pro, not Free: Kit pricing. Automation access varies by plan; classic automation creation is restricted to paid accounts that previously created a classic automation. Check the current account’s access: Mailchimp automation information.
Branding and URL Not stated in the cited free-plan details. Free landing pages use a randomly generated identifier when published; using a verified email domain in the identifier is described as a paid-plan feature. Free embedded forms must include the Mailchimp Referral badge: Mailchimp landing pages; Mailchimp embedded signup forms.

How the signup campaign works on each platform

Kit: more free capacity, with automation as a plan decision

Kit’s current Free plan lists up to 10,000 email subscribers, unlimited broadcasts, forms, and landing pages, plus tagging and segmentation. That can suit a coach who wants to collect registrations and send basic broadcast messages without immediately hitting a low free contact ceiling.

Do not treat that allowance as proof that a timed reminder or replay sequence is included. Kit lists visual automations and its automation template library under Creator and Creator Pro rather than Free. If you need a sequence triggered by registration or scheduled around the training, check the plan requirements for that exact workflow.

Mailchimp: forms and pages, but watch both contact and send limits

Mailchimp supports embedded signup forms and hosted landing pages. An embedded form can apply tags that identify the signup source, which may help distinguish training registrants from people who joined through another form. Free accounts must include the Mailchimp Referral badge, and form styling may require code edits outside Mailchimp.

The Free Marketing plan’s stated limits—250 contacts, 500 sends per month, and 250 sends per day—can constrain a campaign even when the contact list is within the cap. Mailchimp says that exceeding the contact limit places live and test email sending on hold until you upgrade or reduce the contact count. A free landing page also uses a randomly generated identifier when published; use of a verified email domain in that identifier is described for paid plans.

Plan the campaign before you choose

  1. Estimate registrants and total contacts. Include existing contacts, not just new signups, when checking Mailchimp’s 250-contact cap. For Kit, compare your total subscribers with the stated limit of up to 10,000.
  2. Count every planned message. Add invitations, confirmation emails if sent through the platform, reminders, and replay or follow-up messages. Compare the resulting monthly and daily sending pattern with Mailchimp’s Free limits.
  3. Map the timing and trigger. Decide whether messages are one-time broadcasts you will send manually or a sequence triggered by registration and scheduled relative to the event. Then verify that your specific plan supports the automation.
  4. Review the public signup page. Check the form’s required branding, styling options, and landing-page address. Mailchimp’s free page identifier is randomly generated; do not assume the free URL will use your own verified email domain.
  5. Check the rest of your workflow. Confirm how registrants will receive event access, how you will determine attendance, and whether your website, webinar, booking, or course service connects to your email platform. Those requirements are separate from form capture.
  6. Verify current terms in your account. Plan limits, automation eligibility, and legacy access can vary or change. Check the plan and feature details available to your account before relying on a workflow.

Which platform fits which coach?

Choose Kit for a larger free signup capacity

Kit is the more straightforward fit when minimizing free-plan capacity constraints is the main goal, and your campaign can use forms, landing pages, tags, and broadcasts without assuming a free automated sequence.

Consider Mailchimp when its signup workflow fits your setup

Mailchimp may fit if its embedded form or landing-page setup suits your existing process and your expected audience and send volume remain within the Free plan’s limits. Account for the Referral badge, the randomly generated free landing-page identifier, and the plan-specific automation terms.

Compare paid plans if the sequence is essential

If you need automatic registration-triggered reminders or replay follow-ups, compare the paid plan that unlocks the exact automation on each service. A small list alone does not settle the choice: the workflow requirement can make a paid plan necessary on either platform.
