Free-to-play games cost nothing to download, but may earn money through ads, optional purchases, subscriptions, or a combination. Paid games charge upfront. Neither model guarantees what the full experience will cost: check the specific game’s store listing, purchase options, and recent reviews before downloading.
What “free” and “paid” mean for a mobile game
“Free” usually refers to the download price, not every part of playing. Apple describes several models: free apps with no monetization, free apps supported by display ads, and freemium apps that can be downloaded and played at no cost but offer optional in-app purchases. These approaches can overlap; a free-to-play game might use ads and also sell items or subscriptions. Apple’s model guide explains the distinctions.
A paid game asks for money before download. Apple’s developer guidance describes its paid model as a one-time purchase without additional charges or in-app purchases. Treat that as a model definition, not a promise about every game on every storefront: check the current listing and terms for the specific title.
Compare the likely costs and trade-offs

There is no universal cost winner. A free game with no purchases may cost nothing; a game with optional offers could cost more if you choose to buy them. A paid download shifts the cost to the start. The sources do not establish an average player spend, typical game price, or overall cost difference between the models.

What in-app purchases can charge you for
In-app purchase types differ in whether they run out or recur. Apple’s developer guidance describes these common categories: Apple’s purchase-model definitions distinguish them.
- Consumables: Items such as lives or gems that are used up and can be bought again.
- Non-consumables: One-time purchases that do not expire.
- Auto-renewable subscriptions: Access for a stated period that continues billing until canceled.
- Non-renewing subscriptions: Access for a stated period that must be renewed manually.
Before buying, check what the offer includes, its price, and whether it renews. For eligible games distributed through Google Play, Google requires clear and accurate pricing and terms for in-app features and subscriptions, with displayed in-app prices matching the Play billing interface. Google Play policy also requires games selling randomized virtual items, such as loot boxes, to disclose the odds before purchase and close to the purchase point. These are Google Play policy requirements, not universal rules for every store or jurisdiction; Google notes exceptions and alternative billing programs in eligible regions. How to check a game before downloading
- Read the store listing. Check the displayed price, in-app purchase information, subscription terms, and any ad disclosure.
- Read recent positive and negative reviews. Look for specific reports about ad interruptions, paywalls, recurring offers, and whether players can enjoy the game without buying extras.
- Look beyond the “Contains ads” label. Google Play says that label is not intended to identify other commercial content, such as paid product placement or offers for purchases and upgrades. A missing label therefore does not answer every question about how a game may make money. Google Play’s ad-label guidance explains its scope.
- Decide what matters most to you. If you want to try before paying, a free download may suit you, provided you are comfortable checking for ads and optional offers. If you prefer paying upfront, examine the terms rather than assuming the price settles every question.
Store information and game experiences can change. Reviews are useful clues, not a guarantee that your experience will be identical.

How parents and caregivers can manage game spending
Before a child downloads a game, read its age rating and reviews, and look for mentions of ads, subscriptions, paywalls, and repeated purchase prompts. Decide whether purchases are allowed, then use the device or platform’s available controls to disable in-app purchases or require authentication. Agree on family rules before play begins. The FTC recommends these checks and notes that ads can appear at different stages of a game; it also warns that a game described as ad-free may still prompt players to pay for features. Purchase controls can help manage spending, but they do not establish that a game has no ads or pay-gated content. Menu names and steps vary by device and software version, so consult current Apple or Google support instructions for the device in use.
