Free-to-play games are available to download and play without paying for access to the base game. A limited-time free-to-keep offer lets you add a normally paid game to your Steam account during a specific claim window. A free weekend is different: it grants temporary access that ends when the event does. “Free to keep” means an ongoing account license, not legal ownership of the game.

How the three Steam offers differ

Offer What you get What to check
Free-to-play Ongoing access to download and play the base game without paying for access. Optional in-game purchases may be available. The store page for game-specific restrictions, paid content, and account requirements. Steam Support’s free-to-play FAQ notes that individual games can set limitations.
Free-to-keep promotion If you add the game to your account during the stated claim period, it may remain available there afterward as an account license. The current offer’s deadline, region, edition, and eligibility terms. The publisher’s announcement is the source for the specific claim window.
Free weekend Temporary access to a normally paid game during the announced event. The event end time. A discounted purchase may be offered separately; that does not extend the free access automatically. Valve’s announcement archive includes historical examples of free-weekend windows.

What “free to keep” means for your Steam account

For a free-to-keep promotion, the important action is adding the game to your account before the deadline. The promotion may leave you with ongoing access afterward, but “keep forever” is publisher promotional wording. Valve’s Steam Subscriber Agreement says, “The Content and Services are licensed, not sold.” So it is more precise to say the game is added to your account or that you receive an account license than to say you own the software outright.

An offer is not permanent just because an old deal page calls it free to keep. Check the date and terms on the live offer before claiming; a past promotion does not imply that it is still available.

Examples—and why old offers can mislead

Free-to-play catalog

Steam’s Free to Play discovery page currently lists games such as Counter-Strike 2, Warframe, Dota 2, and Team Fortress 2. The page is a changing catalog, not a complete or fixed list. Check each game’s own store page for its current access conditions and any purchases.

Expired free-to-keep promotions

ByteRockers’ Games announced that Catch Me! could be claimed during a 48-hour window and described it as free to keep afterward. That specific July 15–17 offer is historical and has expired; it illustrates why the claim deadline matters, not a current deal. Read the Catch Me! Steam announcement.

In a May 18, 2023 announcement, Steam promoted the original Metro: Last Light Complete Edition as free to keep if claimed before May 25, while distinguishing it from the paid Redux edition. That offer has expired too. Read the Metro: Last Light announcement.

Free-weekend examples

Valve’s PAYDAY 2 announcements have included both permanent-to-account promotions and separate free-weekend notices with defined play windows. These are historical examples, not current offers; their practical lesson is to distinguish an account claim from temporary event access. Check Valve’s announcement archive for the specific notice and its dates.

How to check an offer before you act

  1. For a free-to-play game: open its Steam store page and read the access, feature, and purchase details. The free-to-play label does not mean every feature or item is free.
  2. For a free-to-keep promotion: follow the publisher’s current announcement to the exact Steam product page, check any region or eligibility terms, then add the game before the stated deadline. Do not rely on an old deal post.
  3. For a free weekend: note the event’s end time and assume access stops then unless you separately buy the game or the announcement explicitly grants another entitlement.

Steam’s free-to-play filter is useful for discovery, while a publisher’s current announcement is the better place to confirm a particular promotion’s claim deadline. Offer availability can vary, so verify the live Steam page for your region before relying on a deal.
