A URL-based placeholder gallery can give a demo storefront several related product views without repeating one stock photo: use a shared seed to identify the mock product, then change an angle parameter for another view. A September 24, 2026 DEV Community announcement describes this approach, but its service claims have not been independently verified. Treat the images as mock assets, not evidence of what a customer will receive.
How the one-URL, several-angles approach works
The announced pattern combines a product seed and a view selector. In the announcement’s example, sku-1024 is the shared seed and angle=2 requests another view. The intent is for multiple URLs to depict related views of one mock product, rather than unrelated photos. The announcement does not establish how many angles are available, whether a seed always returns the same image, or how long a generated image remains available.
The announcement says the URL path accepts arbitrary dimensions, WebP is the default, and JPG, PNG, or AVIF can be requested. It lists apparel, shoes, bags, electronics, audio, and womenswear among its categories. These are claims in the announcement, not results of endpoint testing. Its example also says no API key, signup, or attribution is required; verify the live service’s current terms before using it, especially in a commercial or public storefront. The available evidence does not establish uptime, rate limits, image provenance, commercial-use permission, or data-handling practices.

When placeholder photos are appropriate
Use mock product images to make a prototype, wireframe, or internal presentation easier to understand. Related angles can help stakeholders discuss gallery layout and page behavior without leaving a grid full of gray boxes or repeating a single unrelated stock photo.

Keep the distinction from retail imagery unmistakable. GS1’s Product Image Specification Release 3.7 describes sample, prototype, or mock-up images as sketches, images, or computer-generated renderings; section 2.7.4 says the image is intended exclusively for internal communication between business partners and for conceptualizing a product in the ordering process. The release was ratified in December 2020. A generated placeholder should not imply that a real item has those colors, materials, dimensions, or features. Replace it with approved, accurate product photography before publishing a live product listing.

Quota figures above reflect the official documentation accessed in 2026. Unsplash’s production quota depends on approval, and Pexels says higher limits may be requested subject to its terms. Check the current official documentation before building around a quota or policy.

Choose an approach by the job it must do
- Need a fast visual stand-in for a demo: A seeded placeholder pattern is intended to reduce repeated imagery and may be convenient if the announced URL behavior works as described. Confirm that the returned views and categories suit your layout, and check the service’s current terms before embedding its URLs.
- Need authentic, varied photography: An image-library API can supply real photos, but it does not promise that several images show the same fictional product from different angles. Account for API access, attribution expectations, and quotas.
- Need a less abrupt loading state: A compact blurred preview such as Shopify’s documented thumbhash can appear while an original image loads. It is a loading aid, not a substitute for a product photo or a gallery view.
- Need accurate customer-facing product listings: Use approved imagery that represents the goods being sold. A mock rendering is not a reliable way to communicate a product’s real appearance.
Before you embed placeholder URLs
- Check that changing the angle actually returns a distinct view of the same seeded mock item, and check whether results stay stable when reloaded.
- Test the dimensions and output format your storefront needs rather than assuming the announced controls behave as expected.
- Review current terms for commercial use, attribution, hotlinking or hosting rules, request limits, availability, and data handling. The announcement alone does not settle these issues.
- Label mock imagery clearly in internal demos and replace it before a real catalog page goes live.
- Keep a fallback plan for unavailable or changed URLs; the announcement does not establish image persistence or service reliability.
