There is no generally available free tool established here that checks a research manuscript for scholarly text similarity, citation accuracy, and writing quality all at once. Free grammar assessment is a narrower task. Similarity screening is a separate service, and a similarity report flags matching text rather than deciding whether plagiarism occurred. Before uploading an unpublished draft, check the provider’s current privacy, retention, indexing, and deletion terms.

What can a free pre-submission checker actually do?

“Checking a manuscript” can mean several different things. Treat these as separate jobs, because a free feature for one does not establish that a service also performs the others.

  • Text similarity: Compares submitted text with sources available to the service and highlights overlaps. It does not determine intent or decide whether an overlap is plagiarism.
  • Citation checks: May flag citations that appear to be missing. A tool’s claim to check citations is not proof that it validates every reference or confirms that a cited source supports a particular statement.
  • Grammar and language: Identifies possible writing issues. A grammar assessment is not a scholarly similarity scan or a full reference audit.
  • Editorial review: A separate service that may assess a manuscript before submission. It is not an automated checker result or a promise of acceptance.

AJE lists a free grammar assessment and describes separate manuscript similarity and citation-checking services; its presubmission review is a separate paid service. Verify the current scope and price on AJE’s manuscript-checking page. The free grammar feature should not be taken to mean that similarity and citation checks are free too.

Is there a free plagiarism checker for research papers before submission?

The best-supported free option identified for similarity screening is not a general author-facing offer. Crossref Similarity Check is a service for eligible publishing members, powered by iThenticate. Crossref says a participant’s first 100 document checks are free; that allowance is for participants, not for every researcher or individual author. Annual service and per-document fees apply beyond it.

Participation has requirements: publishers must assign DOIs to their content and supply full-text URLs in Crossref metadata. Crossref’s participation guidance specifies full-text URLs for at least 90% of registered articles. See Crossref Similarity Check and its eligibility requirements.

ASME also says researchers can check a paper before submission through iThenticate’s separate researcher service. The individual purchasing terms and current prices are not established here; consult ASME’s author-services information and the provider’s current terms before purchasing. This is a paid-service route, not evidence of a free all-in-one checker.

How to interpret a similarity report

A similarity percentage measures matching text, not plagiarism. Crossref describes the score as matching words divided by total words and cautions that editors should assess the underlying passages rather than reject a paper automatically based on a threshold. The report is a starting point for human review.

  • Open each match and inspect the passage and source, not just the overall score.
  • Check whether the text is quoted, properly attributed, conventional wording, or methods language.
  • Look for overlap with your own earlier work and confirm author identities and source details.
  • Investigate unattributed or unexplained overlap, but do not assume a low percentage proves that every source is cited correctly.

Crossref’s guidance states: “iThenticate does not check for plagiarism; it checks for similarity.” It advises against setting an automatic rejection score: editors and reviewers should decide whether the overlap is acceptable in context. Read Crossref’s guide to understanding a Similarity Report.

Will a preprint show up as plagiarism?

It may appear as a match, and that alone does not mean misconduct. Crossref says it is acceptable to submit a manuscript that has already appeared as a preprint and expects overlap in that situation. Compare the authors and source: a match to your own preprint may be expected, while a match to a preprint by different authors may need investigation. A preprint can surface even if a repository is excluded from the checker’s settings, because the same text may also be available on the web.

Is it safe to upload an unpublished manuscript?

Do not assume a free checker keeps a draft confidential or deletes it after producing a report. Before uploading, read the provider’s current terms for retention, indexing, confidentiality, and deletion. The cited service information does not establish those terms for free standalone checker services, so it cannot support a blanket claim that uploading an unpublished paper is safe.

If the work is confidential, contains sensitive data, or is not yet public, consider whether the service’s documented terms meet your needs before submitting the full text. If the terms are unclear, ask the provider or use a route approved by your institution or publisher.

A practical pre-submission checking workflow

  1. Check the target journal or conference instructions. Policies and screening practices vary; follow the venue’s requirements for preprints, prior publication, citations, and manuscript submission.
  2. Choose the check you need. Use a grammar assessment for language issues, a similarity report to locate matching passages, and a reference review to verify bibliographic details and support. Do not assume one free feature covers all three.
  3. Confirm access and cost. Check whether the service is available to you, what sources it searches, and whether fees apply. Crossref’s first 100 free checks apply to eligible participants, not individual authors generally.
  4. Review upload terms before submitting. Verify how the service handles retention, indexing, confidentiality, and deletion of your manuscript.
  5. Inspect matches manually. Review the passages and sources, including quotations, standard wording, methods text, and any preprint overlap. Correct attribution or investigate questionable overlap rather than trying to reach an arbitrary score.
  6. Complete a separate reference and language review. Confirm that each reference is accurate and relevant, each claim is supported, and the prose is clear. A similarity score alone does not do this work.
