For a personal dashboard, start with CoinGecko Demo or CoinMarketCap if you want aggregated market data; use Binance’s public API if you specifically want Binance market prices. Their free options differ in access, limits, data scope, freshness, and usage terms, so choose based on the data you need—not just the word “free.”

Which free crypto API fits a personal dashboard?

Provider Data scope Free access described in official documentation Check before choosing
CoinGecko Aggregated crypto market data, including current prices, market data, and historical routes. Demo lists 10,000 monthly call credits and 100 calls per minute; attribution is required. Confirm endpoint availability, data refresh, attribution display, and whether your use fits the plan terms. Demo freshness is listed as starting from 60 seconds.
CoinMarketCap Aggregated listings, quotes, history and OHLCV, exchange and DEX data, and global metrics. Its overview identifies watchlists and portfolio dashboards as use cases. Selected keyless endpoints use a shared IP-based rate pool. A free API key offers higher limits and broader catalog access. Official pricing information surfaced for Basic lists 15,000 monthly credits and 50 requests per minute; check the live page because limits can change. Check access and credit accounting for the exact endpoint. Historical depth varies by asset and exchange. Keep keyed calls on a server, not in browser code.
Binance Spot API Binance-specific market data, including REST and WebSocket options. Public market-data endpoints are documented; the reviewed documentation does not state one universal monthly free quota. Endpoint limits and request weights vary. Values represent Binance markets, not an all-market aggregation.

CoinGecko’s Demo figures and attribution requirement are listed on its API pricing page. CoinMarketCap distinguishes its keyless endpoints from API-key access; its API overview describes its data catalog and dashboard use cases. Binance identifies public market-data access and endpoint-specific limits in its Spot REST documentation.

How to choose between aggregated and exchange-specific prices

Choose an aggregator for a broader market view

CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap provide aggregated market information. That is generally the better fit when a watchlist or portfolio screen should show broad market prices rather than the quote on one venue. Compare the exact assets, quote currencies, endpoints, history depth, refresh interval, and plan terms you need; the providers’ broad scope does not mean every endpoint is available on every free route.

Choose Binance when Binance is the intended venue

Binance’s public market-data API is appropriate when the dashboard is meant to reflect Binance markets. The documented market-data-only REST base URL is https://data-api.binance.vision. Do not treat its venue-specific prices as interchangeable with aggregator values; if your dashboard uses both, label each source separately.

What the free plans actually allow

CoinGecko Demo

CoinGecko lists Demo at 10,000 call credits per month and 100 calls per minute, with attribution required. Its pricing page lists freshness starting from 60 seconds for the free plan. These are provider-published plan terms, not a guarantee of observed throughput. Check the live page for eligible endpoints, attribution requirements, and any changes before building around them.

CoinMarketCap keyless and free-key access

CoinMarketCap’s keyless route exposes selected endpoints through a shared IP-based pool; its public documentation does not give that pool a fixed quota. Its documentation says a free API key has higher limits and access to the full Pro and DEX catalog. The Basic figures surfaced in official pricing information are 15,000 monthly credits and 50 requests per minute, but verify those values on the live pricing page before relying on them. CoinMarketCap says credits relate to data returned, not only the number of requests, so a call that returns more data can affect usage differently from a small response.

Binance public market data

Binance documents public market-data endpoints but does not state a universal monthly free allowance in the reviewed documentation. Request weights and rate limits depend on product and endpoint, so estimate usage against the specific routes you plan to call.

Plan dashboard requests before coding

  1. List the data you need. Write down the assets, quote currencies, current values, and historical ranges. Then confirm that your chosen provider’s free route includes the required endpoints.
  2. Estimate usage. Multiply the number of polling cycles by the calls needed per cycle, accounting for symbols per request, pagination, and any requests that cannot be bundled. Calculate both daily and monthly totals, and allow headroom for testing or retries. Credit systems may count returned data as well as raw requests.
  3. Choose a refresh interval that matches the dashboard. Do not poll more often than users need or than the provider’s data freshness supports. Cache responses and reuse them across dashboard views where practical.
  4. Use stable asset identifiers. Where supported, use a provider’s numeric asset ID instead of a ticker symbol. CoinMarketCap warns that symbols are not always unique and recommends its numeric id.
  5. Keep API keys out of the frontend. Put authenticated requests behind a backend or another trusted server-side process. CoinMarketCap says browser calls are blocked to protect API keys and advises routing requests through a backend or trusted server-side environment. Apply the same secret-handling rule to other keyed providers; do not publish keys in JavaScript or a public repository.
  6. Handle limits and failures. Detect HTTP 429 responses and back off rather than retrying immediately. CoinMarketCap’s keyless documentation recommends exponential backoff; Binance advises monitoring limits and using retry/backoff practices. For WebSocket feeds, include reconnect handling.
  7. Show source and update time. Display the provider and the timestamp or update time near dashboard values so readers can tell where data came from and how current it is.

CoinMarketCap’s documentation covers keyless access and rate limits, API security and credit usage, and its guidance on asset identifiers. Binance’s REST documentation describes endpoint-specific limits.

When a free option stops being enough

Revisit your provider if the dashboard needs more credits, faster refresh, broader endpoint access, deeper history, or terms that fit a different kind of use. CoinGecko lists paid tiers with different credits, rate limits, freshness, and licensing; CoinMarketCap also offers paid tiers with different capacity and coverage. Pricing, access, and license terms can change, so verify the live provider terms before upgrading or launching a dashboard for others.
