How to choose Linux forum software
“Runs on Linux” does not describe one common installation path. A forum may need a PHP-capable web server and SQL database, or a Linux host running Docker, or a Node.js runtime and a separate database service. Compare the requirements against the hosting you already have and the maintenance work you can take on.
- Stack compatibility: Check the required runtime, web server, database, and versions against your host.
- Operations: Determine whether you have SSH access and can manage updates, backups, email delivery, and server security.
- Customization: Review the project’s extension, theme, and configuration options against your needs.
- Hosting model: Decide whether you want to operate the server yourself or use an official hosted offering where available.
The four projects below are options with source-backed distinctions, not a ranked or exhaustive top four. A comparison result also surfaced MyBB and Simple Machines Forum, but current official requirements and project health were not established here, so they are not evaluated as recommendations.

phpBB: a PHP and SQL hosting route
The phpBB 3.3 user guide describes a web server or hosting account that supports PHP, a supported SQL database, and PHP 7.2.0 or later with relevant database support. It also lists JSON, mbstring, XML, and database modules among the requirements. These are version-specific instructions, not a guarantee that a host’s current default configuration will work; check the guide and your provider’s supported versions before installation. Flarum: PHP with a release-status caveat
Flarum’s installation documentation calls for Apache with mod_rewrite or Nginx, PHP 8.3 or later with listed extensions, and a supported database: MySQL, MariaDB, SQLite, or PostgreSQL. SSH and Composer are relevant for command-line maintenance and managing extensions, which can make Flarum a less straightforward fit for hosting that only offers a basic control panel.
The documentation labels Flarum 2.0 as being in the release-candidate phase and advises testing and backups before relying on it. Check the current status, upgrade path, and extension compatibility before choosing a release for a live community. Discourse: Docker-based Linux self-hosting or hosted service
Discourse’s install guide requires SSH access to a 64-bit Linux server with Docker support. The project’s open-source page describes a Ruby on Rails backend and Ember.js frontend and says self-hosting assumes familiarity with Linux server administration. This is a different operational commitment from installing a PHP forum on an existing shared hosting account.
Before self-hosting, account for server sizing, backups, outbound email, and Docker operations; the documentation cited here does not establish one universal hardware profile for every community. Discourse also documents a cloud offering as an alternative for people who want to avoid managing setup and maintenance. NodeBB: a Node.js forum with multiple database choices
NodeBB’s project repository describes a Node.js forum that supports Redis, MongoDB, or PostgreSQL. That gives it a distinct stack from PHP-based choices, but the repository summary alone is not enough to establish the current version requirements or deployment procedure. Which option fits your hosting?
- You already have PHP and SQL hosting: Compare phpBB’s documented PHP/SQL path with Flarum’s newer PHP requirements, database choices, and need for SSH and Composer-based work.
- You can administer a Linux server and Docker: Discourse is worth evaluating if you are prepared for server operations, or consider its hosted option if you want to avoid managing the server yourself.
- Your infrastructure uses Node.js: Evaluate NodeBB, then verify the current supported Node.js and database versions.
- You need a definitive “best” or ranked list of 11: The available documentation does not substantiate that ranking. Validate each candidate’s current license, Linux support, maintenance status, requirements, and upgrade/security process before making a shortlist.
