The best free AI coding option depends on where you want the model to run and how you want to work. OpenRouter connects you to a changing selection of hosted free models; Ollama can run models on your own computer or provide limited free cloud usage; GitHub Copilot Free puts an assistant inside supported coding tools. None is a like-for-like alternative, and a $0 price does not mean unlimited hosted use or equivalent coding quality.
How the three free options differ
| Option | Where it runs | What free means | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenRouter | Hosted model providers accessed through a common gateway | A changing collection of model routes with zero prompt pricing for models displayed as free | Availability and rate limits can vary; popularity is not a measure of coding quality |
| Ollama local | Your own computer | Ollama says local model use is unlimited from the service’s perspective | Your computer’s resources and the selected model determine what is practical |
| Ollama cloud | Ollama-hosted cloud models | The free plan includes starter usage for a smaller set of cloud models | The current pricing page lists one concurrent request and monthly usage resets from signup |
| GitHub Copilot Free | Hosted, integrated into supported coding tools | GitHub lists 2,000 completions per month and selected assistant features | Free users access models through automatic model selection |
OpenRouter: choose among hosted free models
OpenRouter’s free-model collection identifies models with zero prompt pricing and offers openrouter/free, which routes each request to a free model that fits. That makes it useful if you want to try different hosted models through one gateway rather than commit to a local setup or one integrated assistant.
The lineup is not fixed. OpenRouter’s collection, updated in October 2026, ranks models by total tokens processed on OpenRouter over the trailing seven days. That is a measure of usage on the service—not a code-quality ranking. OpenRouter Support warns that free models may have low rate limits and may not suit production use. Treat access and limits as changeable, and check the live OpenRouter Support guidance before relying on a free route for ongoing work.
Ollama: run models locally or use its cloud plan
Local models
Ollama lets you run a model on your own hardware. Its pricing page lists local use as unlimited, meaning Ollama does not meter those local runs as a service charge. It does not mean your computer has unlimited memory, processing capacity, or speed. A model that is too large for your setup may perform poorly or fail to run; the cited material does not establish a universal minimum computer specification.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Ollama’s Quickstart describes choosing local or cloud models and using Ollama with desktop apps and coding agents. Local use suits readers who want to run models on their own computer, but model size and device capability shape the experience.
Ollama cloud
Local execution is separate from Ollama’s hosted option. The current Ollama pricing page lists the Free plan at $0, with starter credits for a smaller set of cloud models. It says free cloud usage resets monthly from signup and lists one concurrent request. These are current vendor plan terms, not a promise of unlimited hosted use.

Ollama’s August 31, 2026 transparent-pricing announcement discusses per-token pricing changes for Pro, Max, and Team plans and names Claude Code and Codex among coding-agent integrations. That paid-plan context does not make those plans free or establish how Ollama compares with other tools on coding tasks.
GitHub Copilot Free: an integrated assistant with a monthly allowance
GitHub’s Copilot plans page lists Copilot Free at $0, with 2,000 completions per month, Copilot CLI, community support, and access to selected models. The completion count is a vendor-published plan limit, not a measurement of how many tasks you can finish.

According to GitHub’s supported-model documentation, Copilot Free users access models through automatic model selection only. Unlike OpenRouter, it is not a gateway for choosing from a free-model catalog; unlike local Ollama, inference is not running on your own computer.
Which option should you choose?
- Choose OpenRouter if you want a hosted gateway to a changing set of free models and are comfortable with variable availability and rate limits.
- Choose Ollama local if you want to run models on your own hardware and accept that the computer and model you select determine the practical limits.
- Choose Ollama cloud if you want Ollama’s hosted models without setting up local execution, while staying within the free plan’s starter usage and concurrency terms.
- Choose GitHub Copilot Free if you want an integrated coding assistant and its published monthly completion allowance fits your use.
What these comparisons cannot tell you
There is no controlled comparison here of coding quality, latency, privacy outcomes, or task completion across all three options. The published feature and plan details help distinguish workflows and limits, but they do not show that one tool writes better code or is faster. For consequential work, assess a tool against your own tasks and review its output before using it.
