Free versions of ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Copilot cost nothing upfront, but they can come with usage limits, restricted access to tools or models, and different rules for saving or using conversations. The clearest current details are available for ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. Microsoft’s consumer Copilot information does not support a like-for-like ranking of its limits or conversation-data rules here.

What “free” can cost beyond money

A free AI assistant can trade a subscription fee for one or more constraints: limits on how much or which features you can use, waiting for access to become available again, or decisions about whether conversations are saved, reviewed, or used to improve services. These are separate issues. A usage limit does not by itself tell you how a provider handles your data, and a privacy setting does not necessarily change your access to features.

Providers can change free-tier features, model access, and limits; availability can also depend on account type, product surface, and location. Treat the details below as provider policies, not a standardized privacy test or a guarantee of identical access for every user.

What each free version includes and limits

ChatGPT

OpenAI’s Free Tier FAQ lists web search, data analysis, file and image uploads, discovering and using GPTs, image generation, and 500 MB of Library storage. OpenAI says everyday text chats are unlimited subject to abuse-prevention safeguards. Separate usage limits apply to tools and features, including uploads, data analysis, image generation, voice, and GPT access. The default model and available limits can change, so the feature list should not be read as a fixed allowance.

Claude

Claude does not have a single fixed usage budget that applies equally to every session. Anthropic says usage depends on conversation length and complexity, the features and model used, and the selected effort level. Use across claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Desktop counts toward the same limit. See Anthropic’s usage guidance for the current explanation.

Gemini

Google describes Gemini access without an AI plan as having “standard limits,” and says limits and model availability may change. Its plan and limits page describes current subscription tiers, but relative paid-tier allowances should not be mistaken for a lasting promise about the free tier.

Copilot

Microsoft’s consumer plans page does not establish a comparable current free-tier usage limit or consumer conversation-training rule. That is not evidence that Copilot has no limits or that its data rules match another assistant. Microsoft 365 Copilot and work or school accounts are different contexts and should not be used to fill in consumer-account details.

How conversation data may be used

ChatGPT: model improvement and Temporary Chats

In ChatGPT, the setting “Improve the model for everyone” controls whether new conversations may be used to train OpenAI models. OpenAI states: “When Improve the model for everyone is off, your new conversations won’t be used to train OpenAI models.” Turning it off does not remove chats from history. OpenAI’s data-controls guidance says Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve models. OpenAI may retain Temporary Chats for up to 30 days for safety purposes.

Claude: model improvement and Incognito chats

Anthropic says consumer chats and coding sessions may be used to improve models if a user allows it, if a conversation is flagged for safety review, or through another explicit opt-in. Claude Incognito chats are excluded from model improvement even when Model Improvement is enabled. These rules are described in Anthropic’s consumer privacy guidance.

Gemini: Keep Activity, temporary chats, and retention

With Keep Activity enabled, Google says Gemini activity may be used to develop and improve its services, including training generative AI models. With Keep Activity off, future chats do not appear in activity and are not used for training unless you submit feedback. Google retains those chats for 72 hours to respond and protect its services and users. Google also states: “Temporary chats are not used to train Google’s AI models.” These settings and qualifications are in the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub.

Google says activity auto-deletion defaults to 18 months and can be changed. Chats reviewed by human reviewers may be retained for up to three years and are not removed when you delete Gemini activity. Those retention periods describe Google’s policies; deleting activity is not the same as removing every copy of a reviewed chat. See Google’s privacy guidance for details.

How to choose based on your priorities

  • If you need a broad set of free tools: ChatGPT’s free-tier page lists search, data analysis, uploads, GPTs, and image generation, but those tools have separate limits.
  • If your sessions span Claude apps: factor in that claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Desktop share one usage limit, and that complex or feature-heavy conversations affect usage.
  • If data handling is your main concern: check the relevant controls before sharing sensitive information. ChatGPT’s training toggle leaves chats in history; Gemini’s Keep Activity-off setting has a 72-hour retention period; Claude’s Incognito chats are excluded from model improvement. These are different controls, not directly comparable privacy scores.
  • If you are considering Copilot: consult current consumer documentation for its limits and data settings rather than inferring them from work or school products.

Check the settings before you share

  1. Identify your account and product surface. Confirm that you are using a consumer account rather than a work or school account, and check whether the rules apply to the app or service you actually use.
  2. Review the current free-tier limits. Look at the provider’s official plan or help page, especially if you rely on a particular model or tool. Limits and access can change.
  3. Review data controls separately from chat history. Check whether model improvement is enabled, whether a temporary or incognito option is available, and what the provider says about retention and safety review.
  4. Avoid entering information you cannot afford to expose. A setting that limits model improvement does not necessarily mean a conversation is immediately deleted or never reviewed.
