It brought a StarFive JH7110 RISC-V platform to Framework’s modular laptop ecosystem, but it was intended primarily for developers and hardware enthusiasts—not as a broadly recommended consumer upgrade.
What Framework and DeepComputing announced
DeepComputing independently designed and developed the first DC-ROMA mainboard for Framework Laptop 13. Framework supplied the modular laptop platform and compatibility framework; it did not design the processor or the board. The announcement, dated June 18, 2024, presented the partnership as an expansion of Framework’s approach to replaceable, reusable hardware.
DeepComputing showed an early prototype at RISC-V Summit Europe the following week. The product was later listed for sale, making it possible to use a RISC-V system in Framework Laptop 13 hardware or in a separate desktop-style enclosure.
What is on the original DC-ROMA board?
The specifications below apply to the original DC-ROMA Framework mainboard announced in 2024. They should not be applied to later DC-ROMA generations.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Component or capability | Original DC-ROMA specification | Responsible company or source |
|---|---|---|
| SoC | StarFive JH7110 RISC-V system-on-chip | StarFive |
| CPU cores | Four SiFive U74 RISC-V cores | SiFive cores, integrated into the StarFive SoC |
| Memory | 8GB soldered LPDDR4 | Reported by RISC-V International in February 2025 |
| Storage options | microSD and eMMC | Reported for the original board |
| Operating systems | Ubuntu or Fedora Linux | Reported for the original board |
| Host compatibility | Framework Laptop 13 | Framework and DeepComputing |
The soldered memory means it is not a conventional RAM-upgrade platform. A single-board purchase also requires a microSD card for operating-system installation, according to DeepComputing’s product listing.
How the partnership fits Framework’s modular strategy
Framework’s value proposition is the ability to keep using the same laptop chassis, display, keyboard, ports and other components while replacing the mainboard. A partner-developed board extends that idea beyond x86 processors and gives another company a path to build compatible hardware.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
In this arrangement, the roles are distinct:
- Framework: the Laptop 13 platform and the compatibility target.
- DeepComputing: design and development of the DC-ROMA mainboard.
- StarFive: the JH7110 processor SoC.
- SiFive: the U74 CPU cores referenced in the RISC-V International overview.
Calling the processor a “Framework chip” would therefore be inaccurate. Framework’s contribution was the modular host platform and its support for a partner board.
Who should consider the original board?
Framework’s own availability announcement on February 4, 2025 described it plainly: “This is very much a developer-focused board to help accelerate maturing the software ecosystem around RISC-V.” The same announcement recommended that people seeking a consumer-ready experience wait for future RISC-V products.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Good fit
- Developers porting or testing software on RISC-V Linux.
- Students learning about open instruction-set architectures and embedded systems.
- Framework owners who enjoy hardware experimentation and can troubleshoot an evolving platform.
- Researchers or makers who want a replaceable RISC-V computer rather than a finished mainstream notebook.
Poor fit
- Anyone expecting a drop-in replacement with the same software and peripheral behavior as a mainstream Framework x86 board.
- Buyers prioritizing predictable battery life, broad application compatibility or polished consumer support.
- Users who need upgradeable memory, since the original board has 8GB of soldered LPDDR4.
The announcements establish the board’s architecture and intended audience, but they do not establish benchmark results, battery-life figures, universal peripheral compatibility or a conventional consumer-laptop experience.
Purchase configurations and setup considerations
DeepComputing’s listing described a single-mainboard configuration and larger packages. The Standard package included a Framework/Cooler Master case, while the Pro package included a Framework Laptop 13. The listing also described a debug expansion card and other bundle contents.

Because package contents, operating-system choices, shipping dates and stock can change, verify the live DeepComputing listing before ordering. For a standalone board, budget for a microSD card and choose the case or other enclosure required for your intended use. The board’s Linux support is described as Ubuntu or Fedora; the listing and current documentation should be checked for the exact supported images and installation procedure.

DeepComputing announced DC-ROMA Mainboard III on May 12, 2026. That later generation is also described as compatible with Framework Laptop 13, but it uses a SpacemiT K3 RISC-V AI SoC and was announced with a starting price of $699. Those details belong to Mainboard III, not the original JH7110 board.

What this milestone does—and does not—prove
The partnership demonstrates that Framework’s modular design can support a processor architecture supplied by an independent hardware partner. It also gives RISC-V developers a laptop-sized platform instead of limiting experiments to small development boards.
It does not, by itself, show that RISC-V software support has reached x86-level maturity, that the board matches Framework’s mainstream performance, or that every Laptop 13 component behaves identically. The most defensible reading is narrower: the DC-ROMA made Framework Laptop 13 a practical test platform for an evolving RISC-V ecosystem.
Recommendation
Choose the original DeepComputing DC-ROMA RISC-V Mainboard for Framework Laptop 13 if your goal is development, education or experimentation and you accept Linux and hardware rough edges. If you want a dependable everyday Framework laptop, follow Framework’s February 2025 guidance and wait for a future RISC-V product aimed at consumer readiness.
